Supermarket Moment
By Buchan
24 June 2006
I was in the local American Supermarket and the two Ladies were in front of me .I heard the conversation with my own ears.  The Young lady behind the "Check-Out" Counter.,was being nice  there was no offence meant and afterwards ,little said.

             Inside the door
             Cool in the store.
             Atmosphere clean
              Lots of veggies and greens
              Breads,cans,meats,chickens galore
              The stores inside world
              In an outside way

Just like life you have to pay
Drop in the basket, take it away

In front of me two ladies
              One with a southern drawl
              The other very English, tall

              In the line,to the "Check-Out'
               Lovely young woman Virginia sweet
               Addressing the English Lady tall
"Your not an American at all"
No I am English I declare.
Virginia Sweet with smile to say
Thank you, "Have a Nice Day

Sweet Young Lady in kindness says
To Lady from Oxford England ,in her dress
May I say I love the way you speak
Picking up the language I can tell
                You talk American very well.

Thanks for your review.

"You talk American very well."

I sp'ose we do.

Interstingly some "Americanisms" are actually old "Anglicisms" tant we we've abandonned.

Hi Buchan

I love poems based on 'watching people'. You've captured the essence of the supermarket experience, and the little confrontation of English and American women is just superb, really grabs the moment and I can almost see the scene in my mind.

An I love the ending...great humour!

Well done

best wishes

oh, Americans can be so incredibly dim about their English language, and since I'm one, I can say that.

I always enjoy going north to British Columbia (just 15 km away from where I live) and the British influence is wonderfully refreshing, from the accents, to the architecture, to the signs and phrasing/pacing of the language.

Not to mention a smattering of French too..

this was quite entertaining to read.
love it!

:grin By contrast, the insufferable Danish madame who took one look at me in the supermarket in Esbjerg and then said very condescendingly to my girlfriend:
"Your ...... friend ..... speaks Danish well, I suppose, for a Turk...."

The pause before and after "friend" was intended as an insult. The ref. to being a Turk was (I assume) because I ALWAYS take an immediate deep allover tan as soon as winter gives way to spring .....
