War

A poem I wrote awhile ago. Its not the best I have ever written but its not bad.

With the crash of guns death calls to me.

And my final battle has begun.

And we march steadily on.

Shots ring out and blood splatters and men fall.

In front of me someones head splits like a melon and he falls.

And we march steadily on.

I can see the geysers of dirt explode as the rounds from cannons land ahead of us.

Death calls on us all.

And we march steadily on.

I have lost many friends in this war of the states.

Their faces haunt my sleep and my days.

And we march steadily on.

As we close on their lines more of us fall.

I head for death.

And we march steadily on.

I can not hear anything but the sound of war but the crack of a gun separates itself.

I can see it flying to me. Death. I open my arms and…………….blackness.

And they march steadily on.

How appropriate

Today we are remembering the 60,000 young lives taken in mass massacre in the first battle of the Somme. Lives lost in Vain. (See my poem too). What a waste of human life - and Jesus told us we should love our neighbour as ourself. Why does mankind know best?

This really so well written, as words from a soldier marching on, and so appropriate. Thanks for writing it.

I wouldn't want to be a soldier... the prospect of injury or death when you walk into any engagement must weigh heavy on your mind and in your heart.

Good writing

Thanks

Make love not war - Be prepared for both.
Young men love it as much as young lassies hate it. :sigh

good piece,i kind of thought of this as being in the days of Wterloo etc,
re being a soldier,i dont know about young men loving war, after a very short period of time you soon see that war is a terrible thing.
No Change

This is a very strong poem, tackling an extremely painful and emotive subject. The rawness and stark reality of what a solider faces was brought home so effectively in this poem, I had a lump in my throat.

The vivid capture of battlescenes 'head split open like a melon', 'geysers of dirt explode' make it easy to picture.

The continual 'and the we march....' really worked, especially the last line, substituting 'we' with 'they', making the whole act of war so futile and life so bloody insignificant, cause nothing ever changes...You captured this so well...

A fantastic poem!

well done and best wishes

I first read this in the Anthology book this morning. I was deeply touched. I thought it was fantastic. Not a critical word to say about it! An inspiring piece of work!
