Waiting

Waiting

Alone upon a cliff above the sea
A woman waited. She endured the wind
And rain, the fading light, the solitude,
Still scanning the horizon for a sign.
She stayed till darkness fell and all the stars
Became her lantern lights to help her search,
For that faint beacon, an eager thrusting prow,
Cresting broken waves upon that heaving mass
Of ocean, that soon might herald those for whom
In constant hope she kept a watch. See there!
Was that the sign for which she prayed? Or just
Some creature, rising from the depths, to seek
Like her, a fellow feeling friend for whom
The heart yearns when the soul in silence dwells?
She sighed, perhaps tonight was not to be
The one when all her dreams and waking thoughts
Would be fulfilled. Perhaps her destiny,
Wrought by those wheeling stars whose light now waned
And weakened, like the light of hope she fanned
Each weary day until its fitful flame
Kept her from heeding to the cold Despair
That tempted her to say, “They dare not come”
For come they would and find her waiting still.

After I had read the first three lines I coulden't wait to read more and find out why the woman waited.Your imagery " and all the stars became her lantern lights ", absolutely wonderful, " a fellow feeling friend ", it just gets better "fitful flame", this is such clever stuff, I felt so involved in this woman's lonely vigil and moved by your sensitve treatment.Am becomming a big fan of your work you are truly a great poet mike, more please!

Hi Mike

As soon as I started reading, I had a picture in my mind, maybe late 18th Century, a woman in a cape, blowing around her - French Lt Women style - looking out to sea.

Your poem instantly created almost a film in my mind, and instilled a romantic (?) backstory, that intrigued me, and I found myself wanting to know more.

The sparkling imagery was terrific, and the constant flow worked for this style of poem.

Really good work

best wishes

love the last line, it's my kind of rhythm.
your portrayal of the woman and descriptino of the stars ['lantern-lgihts' lovely :)] reminds me of oscar wilde's fariy stories, but I can't think why.

I look forward to reading you more
