It is a family tradition to go out on the 4th of July and drink yourself stupid. And I am not the type to disappoint family. I really tied one on and was up until 2 am finally falling asleep on my sisters couch. Regretfully I was not able to sleep much and was up at 5:30 am. My wife had to be at work at 11 am so we drove home. On the way home we witnessed an accident and this is my version. My head pounded with every beat of my heart and my stomach felt like it was inside out. Only about 15 more miles to home, thank goodness. My mind wandered thinking of a short story I had thought of last night. My wife in the passenger seat was talking about her job while our son slept in his car seat. I spotted a 4-door dualie pickup in the opposite lane cresting the hill ahead of us. The truck suddenly swerved and went into the ditch on my side of the road. A huge dust cloud erupted from the ditch. I slammed on the gas and sped to the accident. In my mind I was picturing all the accidents I have seen in my life, after my short Naval career I had become a tow-truck driver. My Wife grabbed our celphone and was reporting the accident. Sliding to a stop I jumped out of the car. I noticed that the truck had had a trailer hitched to it. The trailer was 25 feet away from the truck. The truck was upside down with the front end lying across a barbwire fence. If you have ever seen a movie about a plane accident you have seen stuff strewn everywhere, which is what it reminded me of. The truck was from a local construction company I noticed. Smoke poured from the engine and tires hissed from the trailer. I saw all of this as I ran torwards the truck expecting injured people to be trapped inside. There were five guys standing outside of the truck by the time I reached it. They were all in shock and I seemed to be going to shock also. No one was trapped luckily and they all seemed to have minor injuries. A nurse had stopped also and was helping them with their injuries. My son had awoken while I was trying to help out. “What did you do?” He asked my wife when he saw the truck upside down. I left shortly after that help was on the way and the nurse had it under control. My hands shook as I drove away and my stomach was in worse shape.
