- A true story of life in Southern Spain (well from where I was standing) All the people are real only the names have been changed to protect the record.
Another Saturday in Southern Spain a round of parties and escapes from reality. The weather as usual was excellent even in October the sun was shining with a light heat unlike the sun's summer burning all around the town of Marbella.
Thoughts of Hemingway who loved Spain and all its cultures and ways, came into my mind. Ernest certainly went to his share of parties. I liked the style and words of Hemingway ,I suppose that is his greatness. I remember him once writing "A writers problem does not change,he himself (the writer changes). Very profound ,I wondered how much Hemingway changed in thought and deed. Too much thinking I thought replacing Hemingway with "now where is this party"? I suddenly realized that I didn't even know my hostesses name.
I walked towards the old town where I remembered the party house, near the old square. I had received an invitation through a mutual friend. This was the way that things got done,I had no official written invitation. Now I remembered that the Lady who was having the party was from Chihuahua Mexico and that she was here on holiday or even vacaciones I remembered that Mexico got her independence from Spain in 1921.I had no idea of the ladies name or even what she looked like.
As I walked along traffic filled roads I felt a few spots of rain ,it was October and the rainy season should begin soon...We really needed rain. More drops quickened my step and I was now in the old part of town ,walking down a narrow street just off
Orange Square .In front of me was an old villa with a large wooden door, with a brass handle. Yes this is it even without the sound of music coming from inside I knew this house...The bright flowers in boxes on the window added colour to the setting .I raised my hand and knocked . Loud was the sound, a couple of people looked at me as if I had done something wrong. A short time went by and the door opened.I was greeted by a middle age man in a light suit ,with dark tie. He spoke to me in Spanish ,then realising I was not Spanish he changed to perfect English I am Jose he said in a round voice with little accent... " Good afternoon " I replied.
Then words of joy ,he said Marie Carmen will be with us in a moment she is organizing the food.. Thats it Marie Carmen I had got her name and it was wonderful
almost like a summers day in winter .I was happy I would have been at a disadvantage not knowing her name...now all was well.
