Can I?
By lordspudz
07 July 2006
This is a poem I'm including in my novel and was interested in some comments.
It was written by the main character shortly after losing his wife in an accident.

Can I?

Can I sleepwalk back to a time where waking was paradise found?

Can I play in the land of haunted memories where time is a wounded soul?

Can I run through fields of emblazoned corn and weep where once was joy?

Can I smile at your face with hope where once reigned abject pessimism?

Can I walk these streets of cosy familiarity, retracing steps where love strode carefree?

Can I dance to the beat of long forgotten rhymes in halls of acoustic muteness?

Can I dare do these things in stark solitude where once was union?

Can I live without you?

Can I?

I think you've touchd on a very important issue, namely set backs, and in particular a huge one such as the loss of a partner or child, will often erode our sense of personal invulnerability and shake our confidence.

The question 'can i?' is so true

great stuff

Strong stuff...very, very good.

You've captured that feeling that we need to do things together, and living in solitude after the loss, you just can't live the same life.

Living life without a loved one, is very much a 'Can I' and most would say, 'I can not'.

A painful poem and that touches too deeply, to allow me to feel comfortable...and that is what good poetry should do.

Well done

best wishes
