Remember when...
By NorthernLights
07 July 2006
What would we do without our memories?

Remember sprawling lazily in the meadow gazing up at the sky
and imagining what magical creatures you could create from the clouds?
Or searching for the perfect blade of grass
to belt out the loudest, winning duck call?

Remember the quarter your grandfather slipped secretly into the palm of your
hand that would buy you a fortune at the corner store?
Or having your friends spin you furiously on the merry-go-round,
holding on for dear life, while frantically resisting the urge to throw-up?

Remember lifting the top of your desk so you could snicker mercilessly with
your very best friend, only to have your knuckles rapped by the ruler?
Or burying caterpillars in tiny tombs,
only to unbury them later to see if they survived?

Remember slipping that despised piece of liver to the dog
or cunningly wiping your mouth with the napkin?
Or running home at full steam, bladder overflowing,
only missing salvation by seconds?

Remember your first kiss,
and how you had butterflies fluttering inside you for days?
Or your first french kiss,
and how you thought there was nothing more repulsive?

Remember dousing your body in a mixture of baby oil and iodine
while sunning to Top 40 tunes?
Or your first fearless stab at skinny-dipping,
only to be high-beamed by those you called friends?

Remember the exhilaration of freedom you felt
as you cut the apron strings to venture out on your own?
Or that overwhelming cloud of anxiety
that encompassed you when you realized that you were actually there?

Remember your first love,
and how no one could tell you it was wrong?
Or your first real break-up,
and how, for once, you wish you had listened?

Remember the first time you looked into your lover's eyes,
and how you knew that they were the one?
Or the tears that were shed
after your very first fight?

Remember that glorious day when love prevailed
and you were asked to share your life with another?
Or the walk that you took, with God as your witness,
down the aisle to the one that you loved?

Remember the excitement you felt as you realized
that your family of two, would soon become three?
Or that transcendant day your first child was born,
and no matter how painful it had been you would do it all over again?

Co-incidentallly I've just finished reading Northern Lights by Philip Pullman so I felt drawn to this. I don't know much about poetry but for me this is what it should be about. I loved this piece. You expressed it all so clearly , the pain, happiness exhilaration, love, It was so clearly and honestly expressed and (happily) free of literary pretention. You captured the memories of your emotions so vividly. You really can write. let's have some more
cheers

Thank you, BBS! This was my second stab at poetry... actually my second stab at writing anything (other than in my blog)! I am glad you enjoyed it :)

If I can make at least one person smile in a day, then I have accomplished a full day's work :grin

Beautiful imagery. Such a succesful summation of life. Don't care much for the form, but thats just me. With poetry it is hard to please everybody. But even though I don't like the form, I've still connected with the piece with is very important. Very well written.

i've been skinny dipping countless times, but never high beamed. This is probably because I don't know what it means. How would I go about being high beamed?

Thank you, that was very kind of you! As for the form, I am so new to writing (this was only the 2nd item I have ever written)... hopefully with time it will improve.

As for high-beamed, it is when they throw the headlights from a car from low-beam to high-beam. In this instance, they were pointed directly down at the lake we were in :eek
Beautiful Memories

I loved this poem...

The repetition of 'Remember When...' took the poem from just being two dimensional to being something that had greater depth, that directly connected and drew in the reader to be part of the poem. In fact, the reader actually finishes the poem, on the line 'Remember when...' you're already in memory recall mode.

Very cleverly written. Superb imagery. Excellent humour!

More of the same please....

best wishes

WoW! Did you just list MY memories? With the exception of burying caterpillars (I buried cats instead - JUST KIDDING ;)).

I loved this, I lived through all of these and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for making me recall them all over again.

I think I better put a call into my childhood girlfriend and catch up on old times!
