A-level Guilt

Absolutely no idea where this came from, ideas welcome.

Title change needed, non?

"I went to a Catholic school, it was an alright education...you got A-level Guilt..." - Billy Conolly

Madonna, Mother Supreme, Virgin,
Take away this empty feeling
That grows like a child inside of me,
Make it better than it is.

I don’t understand why it’s there,
But they tell me it’s there
For a purpose. Give me strength,
Virgin, to believe in that purpose like a good child should
Like a christian should.

Help me to put the cramp in my ribs
Down to a flaw in my heart, and to soldier on
To fill it with selflessness.
But you see, Sacred Mother,

That selflessness is so impure,
That even the lowest of angels sees
Through my stained window of a soul.

Chosen One, help me to bear the load
I have brought upon myself.
Never let me waver from remembering
Why I kissed the cross and saved my
Self from Satan.

His trident looms,
In the dark behind my eyelids.
I feel each jab, pangs in my abdomen –
Forcing words infused with pain;

Hail Mary, save my soul
Hail Mary, deliver me
Hail Mary, bail me out
Hail Mary,
                 Save my sorry ass

From the eye-deep shit I’m in;
I wanna go home. Which way is out?
Father? Son? Mother?
Holy Ghost?
I’m begging you all now,
I’m a believer, get me out of here.

Very honest. I liked the shameless truth in lines like "get my sorry ass out of here" because a lot of us are thinking that while we pray. The line "stained window" is also good because it invokes images of stain-glass windows and churchly things. I like the title, but it doesn't quite go with the content of the poem, since the poem, more than anything, is a prayer. Maybe look at some prayer names and see if you can come up with something.

Good work,

This just came up in my 'Work Awaiting Review' box, and I am glad it did.

I love the line, 'Hail Mary / Save my sorry ass;' it is so nicely incongruous.

Take my word for it -- you don't have to be Catholic to grow up with A-level guilt.
