this poem is for my youngest son. written the morning he started his leaving cetificate exam. the realisation of his growing up. I remember your sweet delicious smell unobtainable from bottles. I remember your perfect tiny fingers held tight uncurlilng, grasping my finger. I remember your long body stretching out feeling the world about. I remember your tears flowing a goodbye to the warmth of the womb. I remember your voice in those first gasps of breath a sound of recognition. I remember holding you feeling rejuvenated in your presence. I remember you a baby. Now I look, see what life you hold as you grow into the skin of adulthood. Your hand still grasps at life, and life still carries your voice upon its back. I remember the dreams I dreamt for you, and know they were mine yours are weaving their threads as you journey on your road.
