Local Politics

Outside Argos and Poundstretcher the uncharismatic heirs of Mosley and Il Duce stand in the spring sunshine, scrawny, pimpled skinheads handing out National Front leaflets.

A pensioner, maybe a war veteran, reads a leaflet attentively, politely hands it back,

Unmoved by promises of free prescriptions and fighting the rising tide of communism.

Has no-one told them Communism is dead, and MacDonald’s rules Red Square?

The lads form a huddle, confer,

Then shrugging, as one they dump their leaflets in a bin, like a kid’s unfinished paper round and head off down the pub.
