Robbers Dog

For an Old Mate

He had a head like a robbers dog,
Big and Ugly,
a face that only a mother could love,
that you could use to scare kids with,
bound to give them nightmares.

Yet

He was a gentle man
gentle in nature
gentle in heart
he would share both with friends and strangers
what little he had.

in his simplicity
in his kindness
he was a beacon of humanity,
but God,he was ugly,
ugly as sin
and in our modern age
where cosmetic beauty
is bought and sold
much like whore's
he was oppressed by beauty.

My Mate Pete the Drunk.

..... those who have b**** all to call their own are so often most generous with what little they have (anyone growing up in 1960s Liverpool will confirm this)
