Two Thousand Years
By maipenrai
15 July 2006
One from my much younger days, far less cynical then now.

I have sat at this bar
for two thousand years,
I have seen the birds
the white doves
fly in and lay their eggs in your beer
which you have drunk and destroyed
for the sake of your thirst.

I have stood and watched
the old one's who died yesterday
let their bodies drink the beer today
and I have heard the words of your hero's
repeated by the sheep.

I have watched the sheep
being led to the slaughter
and as the blood from
the slaughtered one's fell
I have watched you turn away
and deny that it had happened

Maybe not as cynical but just as feeling for others. I hope writing eases the pain. terrific last stanza. Shades of Owen?

There's something about this poem but I can't figure out what...after reading it, it's like there's something clawing at my mind but I can't figure out what...I enjoyed reading it, though!! :)
interesting

This is uniquely sharp, but I'm afraid I don't understand it much. I like your choice of words- would you explain them for me so I can appreciate them more? :)
thanks

B.D and GK. thanks for your comments and for taking the time.

OK,this i think was the first poem i wrote many years ago in my distant youth and in my arrogance i thought i knew a great deal (the arrogance of youth is i think part of growing up).

as i have said the original was written many years ago,i dont remember there being any great message in it,just a rather shallow and conceited young man trying to be clever.

now i look at it in some amazement,it is in fact not a bad piece and i think that each reader should take out of it whatever they can,to each reader it may have a different meaning

thanks
bernie.

A strange poem, but I loved it. I hear a wise old person talking.
May sound silly but the style put me in mind of Autumn of the Patriarch!!
Thank you for another lovely read. marybarry
