A story I made up for my daughter when she was little. The King was having his breakfast on the veranda of his palace one morning when two friendly frogs came hopping to the foot of the steps and bowed most politely. The King was a frog too. A rather portly fellow with a fondess for big fat juicy flies. In fact that was what he was having for his breakfast, big fat juicy fly jam on toast. His body guards stepped in front of the two friendly frogs and asked them to state their names and business with the King "If it please Your Majesty, our names are Ron and Stan and we have come here this morning to apply for jobs as soldiers in your guard Sir. We want to wear the shiny uniforms and the helmets and carry swords and guard the palace. We think we would be very good at it. If it please You Majesty." "Well, it pleases me greatly." Mused the King "That two such polite and fit young fellows such as yourselves want to make a career in the King's Guard but it worries me that you think all it is about is the wearing of shiny uniforms and waving a sword about in the garden. The training is long and hard and I must know if you are brave and true before you even start. Go away for a while and try your best to do a very brave thing in my service. When I hear about your adventure and your bravery I will consider you to be good enough to join my army. Be off with you now, my toast is getting cold." With a wave of his hand he dismissed the two friendly frogs. They hopped dejectedly down to the bottom of the palace garden where there were some nice overgrown ponds. "There might be monsters here." Said Ron. "We could kill one and drag it back to the palace." "No." answered Stan. "Someone has to see us do a very brave thing and no-one ever comes down here except for us." "AAAAAAAAarrrgggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh1 Shoo. Go away. Help. I am being attacked." Ron and Stan exhanged puzzled looks. Then Ron, taking the initiative as always in their adventures grabbed the nearest stick ( a twig to you and me) in one hand and Stan in the other and hopped furiously to where the cry for help had come from. Balanced precariously on the side of the weed filled ornamental pond was a girl frog. She was being ambushed by four huge bees. They were after the sandwich she was holding in her hand. "Oh, thank goodness you have come. Please help me. These bothersome bees are after my jam sandwiches. Ohhh! I shall fall in and spoil my beautiful dressing gown and then Daddy will be cross. Or worse, I will be stung!!!! don't just squat there gawping. Do something.." Ron and Stan had stopped in their tracks as they realised it was the princess Lilypad, youngest and most spoilt daughter of the King who the bees were terrorising. It was Stan (suprisingly) who snapped out of it first. He grabbed the stick off Ron and charged the bees, waving the stick frantically to shoo them away with no regard for his own safety or the danger of being stung. Tbis was the King's daughter. This was their chance to do a very brave thing. "Quick." He shouted to Ron. "You help her down while I keep the bees away. Make her chuck the sandwich in the pond." Ron jumped to grab the Princess round the waist and pull her to the grass below the parapet of the pond. He snatched the sandwich and flung it out in to the middle of the weed choked mess. The Bees, forgetting to be angry with Stan, dived to get the jam before it sank. "You can let go now." The princess said to Ron who was still gripping the dainty creature by the arm. "Oh, oh, sorry miss, Princess, er Your Highness." "You may call me Princess Lily." She said. "That was a very brave thing that you both did for me. Thank you. I will go straight to the King and tell him. Will you escort me? I am still a little shaken from the horrid bees." So the two friendly frogs walked the Princess Lilypad back to the palace where she recounted the tale to her Father the King. "And so." She concluded. "I think Father, that you should immediately employ Ron and Stan to be my bodyguards. They will, of course have to join your army and have shiny suits and helmets and proper swords. A stick might not be enough to fight the next dangerous beast with." The King thanked the two friendly frogs and invited them to join the army straight away. The captain found them some shiny suits and helmets and a small sword each and the King decreed that after their training they would be put in charge of looking after Princess Lilypad's personal safety. "Thank you Your Majesty. We will work hard and guard The Princess Lilypad against all danger and nasty bees and suchlike for ever and ever."
