Hi Bernie, I hadn’t realised quite how long you’d been on the GW site, you’ve been dormant for a while!!!! Had I not been aware of your latter works I would have probably looked at this as having a slight commie edge to it. “Arise worker soldiers” but I fully understand your sentiments with this piece. A slightly more vehement attack than some of mine, although I would invite you to read ’Sex & Religion’ in the comedy room!!!!

with this poem. Religions, cults and creeds have all been so badly corrupted over the decades that they don't seem to represent what they were first about. I do believe in a force for good and one for evil, and I agree that the force is inside us all, and that we can call on it in times of emergency. The sheer hypocrisy of some of the leaders of the various religions, in their fine robes, and mansions, while some of their congregation 'lead lives of quiet desperation.' The Imans getting kids to murder and promising paradise - if it was so rewarding, surely they would be first in line? Grrrrr! |

| I was about to write a piece about some of the darker pages of recent history. Yet it seems I hear an echo of the cultural revolution itself here. What's next? Burning temples, shooting monks, pouring ink over the heads of educated people, destroying thousand years of culture, openly critizizing one's own parents, storming foreign embassies and torturing potential contra-revolutionaries? Even chairman Mao himself eventualy turned his back on such radicals. |

Steve, Audrie, Fledermaus, thanks for your comments. Steve, always been left wing as regards politics. Audrie, Organised religion is a tool of oppressors Fledermause, not about the cultural revolution but about the Russian Revolution. Again, thanks to all. Bernie |

Just a tiny nit-pick, since nobody else has mentioned it ........ I assume you have NOT read "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" by Lynn Truss? There are a number of places where you have inserted the "grocer's apostrophe" when you use a PLURAL word (eg. god's instead of gods, or prophet's instead of prophets And my proofreader's [yep! that one should be there!] eye spots "peasents" instead of "peasAnts" but overall this poem flows nicely and the message it contains comes across loud and clear - thank you! |

and in v.1 "of" instead of "off" .... that'll teach me to CHECK before I post |

A powerful poem dealing with very controversial subject matter - more wars have been fought and more blood spilled over religion than for any other reason. "We are all equal, it's just that some of us are more equal than others." (Not an exact quote I think, but pretty close.) Tracey |

" What's next? Burning temples, shooting monks, pouring ink over the heads of educated people, destroying thousand years of culture, openly critizizing one's own parents, storming foreign embassies " Hey! I certainly hope so. I'd do that and more if it got rid of religion. I guess you haven't said anything new, here but the truth always bears repetition and you put it all together very cognently. It's funny, religion is the one form of oppression where people actually connive at their own oppression and seem to revel in it. A powerful piece,it cheered me to read it.I'm glad it got flagged up Jane

Must say that although I disagree with the message, I think the subject is too interesting, hence I come back The USSR tried to eredicate religion. The result though was not that people became a-religious, but rather the personality cult of Stalin, were every word he spoke (even if he joked) was taken as an order. People just seem to need something to believe in and if you take away the old they'll invent something new. Appearantly there is also a cathedral in Moskow which was turned into a planetarium. They tore out the pictures of saints and replaced them with kosmonauts. Gagarin as the new holy man of Russia |

I think you have made a real good point here,"people need something to believe in", that is a very valid and good point. religion is a clutch to cling to, the idea of some kind of after life with heaven for the good guys and hell for the bad guys is comforting, i was brought up a devout rc, confession, mass, communion the whole lot, but over the years and with doing a lot of travel, seeing things, talking to people I came to the conclusion that god, church, saints etc were just so much nonsense, something to keep the people down, drowning in a sea of self indulgent myths and lies, the only people of religion I have any respect for are buddist and in the "olden days in South America" the worker priests who took on the rights of the poor against military goverments and dictatorships implanted by us multi-nationals |
