This amusement in now way condones the action of two men who attempted to sail a trawler from Anglesey to Dublin nor does it make light of the damage done to said trawler. It is just an attempt to see the funny side of life

We’re just two young lads missed the ferry, I’m sure now that you’ll understand
It’s easily done as the clock whizzes round and you with a pint in your hand.
But now that the ferry has left us, how are we going to get home?
We can both swim of course but home is too far, far out across that rough foam.

Now here’s an idea worth considering, let’s say that we borrow a boat
I don’t think we’ll get into trouble, sure, we can say we were acting the goat.
We’ll sail it straight home to Dun Laoghaire, by sea now, it’s not very far
What? We don’t know the way? You’re an eejit! Sailors just follow a star!

How do we start up the engine? Go on, give that button a try
See, look, now! The engine is working! We’ll soon be at home safe and dry.
Do you think that this wheel is for steering? Or does this thing work like a ‘plane?
You just put it on auto and take a back seat. That way there’s no strain on the brain!

We seem to be moving quite smoothly and at least up to now there’s no rocks
Just think of the welcome they’ll give us when this class of sailing thing docks!
There’ll be cheering and shouting and whistles, they might even bring a brass band,
Our mothers will see us both, on R.T.E. Oh won’t the reception be grand!

But to tell you the truth, I feel seasick. Shall we give the auld coastguards a bell?
They’ll soon have us home in a couple o’shakes, ‘cos really, I’m not feeling well.
What’s that you say? They were laughing? And they said we’d been chasing our tails?
After all our hard work and the danger we’ve faced, we’ve just sailed in circles round Wales!

Mike. I really enjoyed this. You should extend it to a full ballad. You could do so much with it. Loads of fun! Yes, I would have liked to have done something myself but you got there first.

My apologies for being so late. But better late than never.

Thanks for your kind message and e-mail. How well I remember Ardwick. I'll put some thoughts together when I have a moment and get back to you.

Slan!
