On Luck
By 1leggedswan
27 July 2006
Here I have a leaf, once-red, now rotten.
That, for luck, I caught on a windy day.

I put it in my pocket, yours, because,
It was your blue jacket I wore those days.
And there, crushed, beneath books and pens it lay,
Battered and bruised, left and quite forgotten.

I kept your jacket; I kept it in a cupboard.
Less and less I wore it, and then you went away.

Then by chance I met you, and you muttered
Hello, and How are you; perhaps someday,
(How heart leapt!) you could have your jacket back?

Well, here: you’ve rights to what’s yours- I could say,
You know, I had rights too. The leaf I may,
Keep at least, if you don’t mind. For luck’s sake.

I like the simplicity of this piece. It's very easy to become heavy-handed and sentimental when dealing with this kind of subject but you managed it well :)

Brilliantly restrained expression of emotion. Thanks for such a well written and thoughtful piece.

I don't find your poetry easy to read. That makes me re-read it and it gradually comes alive.

This gets better with every read. You have a very unusual and poetic style.

Thanks
