An exercise in rhyming , with perhaps more than a modicum of truth.
Confused by the rush of the tumbling years
Bemused , close to shedding hot maudlin tears,
troubled by pains that while young he'd ignore,
[ doubled pains , and redoubled , at the age of three score ! ],
Decrying the change made to life by new times,
Denying the sentiments of birthday card rhymes,
Taking dozens of pills as all aging men must,
aching deep in his heart as his dreams turn to dust.
Seven years and much more than the biblical span
Leaven not the bad temper of this grumpy old man.

Age and Rage, but only on Page? Written by Josie (2533 comments posted) 30th July 2006 |
| Don't rage too much. Remember that there are many children who are suffering a lot from pain in this world, and who have never yet started to live. Better to count the good times. This comes from one who has just come out of a dreadful tunnel of pain for the last four years caused by neglect by the NHS. When you feel age and rage, read my poem "Such fun on the downhill slope" - and then put it into practice. Get on your gladrags and paint the town. ha ha |

I really enjoyed this poem. I found it very amusing! Especially the last line. You always seem to get your rhyme schemes perfect and this was no exception. I liked the line in the brackets it highlighted the age factor of the poem. well done patterjack another work of genius! brook |

As always, you are a star player when it comes to poetry... And you have such a knack of bringing the words together so that they flow with such ease and grace, and most of all humour. This is a lovely poem that touches at the heart of growing old...but I tell you, all the time you write quality like this, you're only old outwardly, innerwardly, you are singing with fountain of youth... Best wishes mishmish x |
