Death on the Rogue River
By prosperity
30 April 2005
this poem was inspired whilst going up the Rogue river in Oregeon U.S.A. i was struck by the reaction of my fellow travellers to the sight of the catching of a salmon and its killing. There was  no pity for the salmon. So as you can see this poem is in his honour. i was also struck by the presence of a bald eagle observing the antics of man.

They cheered clapped and with eagle eyes watched
breathes held urging victory against narures desire to live.

             A battle raged
the rod strained looping in the living water
he fought seeked refuge among the rocks,
             the hook dug
             wrenched his throat,
             she held tight
reeling in the thread of death
             the salmon held fast,
moved with swift pleas for life
             she eased her hold
             he swam to false freedom.
             tiredness flooded his weary body.

             She cheated
her accomplice took the silver line
he lay curled in his cage of death
             he gasped for breath,
saw the rays of sunshine kiss his beloved river
felt the cooling breeze caress his tiredness
             a last glimpse
before the victor dealt the deadly blow.

             A cheer went up
the spectators claiming honour for the victor
             the river flowed.

             On the lightening tree
the eagle observed the battle to survive,
             wisdom in your eyes
in one fell swoop you could end it all,
but your powerful wings stayed closed
in honour of the victim you sent a feather,
a gift to ease his spirit.

             And carry on the wind
             to heights
where love abides and confort lies
his spirit soothed on  the breeze.

This poem is a nice homage to a death salmon. I like your feelings about nature (When I read your poem I thought I was reading Robinson Jeffers...)

What I liked the most was the use of verses, It really gave the sensation of speed and bloodshed.

Keep working on your philosophy, deep thoughts I read...
