A monologue. Whilst it's a complete fiction, what i've tried to do is stitch together various things i've heard people say. To try and capture a rationale that i hear frequently.
“Why can’t we all just get on?.. Why can’t we live in peace together? It just breaks my heart when I think about what an evil place this world has become,.. it’s so full of hate and violence..
This used to be such a beautiful country, such a safe place. Everywhere you go now, there are gangs on the street corner. They seem to thrive off of the fear. They beat other poor kids up just for looking at them. Take their phones and money. I don’t know what this country is coming to. It wasn’t like this when I was young. People knew how to enjoy themselves without any trouble. We used to go out and dance. Go out and talk. Yes, we might have a drink now and again. But not like the youngsters now. They have a drink and want to fight the world. What do they need to prove? We just used to enjoy life. You need to, when you get to my age you realise life is so short.
These days you’ve only got to turn on the telly and you see it every night. People murdered. Knife crime. The head teacher outside those school gates. The shopkeeper who tried to stop them robbers. Then there was that young solicitor who was stabbed in the street outside his house. Just trying to stop his car getting broken into. His family must be in bits. All of them were just decent, hardworking people trying to live their lives. And these scumbags come along and destroy it. If you ask me, it’s the drugs. The''re all on drugs these days. Out of their minds, crazy. They are desperate for their next fix. And they would do anything to get it. No one is safe. No one.
A few weeks ago, Mrs Jacobs, the little old Jewish lady from Burnham Row, who feeds the pigeons by the precinct, she was mugged. The boys snatched her bag, and when she wouldn’t let go they punched her in the face. Punched a 90 year old woman!. Its absolutely disgusting. You should have seen the pictures in the local paper. They made me sick. And what for? They only got away with her pension. She’ll never be the same again. I haven’t seen her since the attack. She’s probably too scared to come out now. It just breaks my heart.
And it’s not like it’s a one off. My best friends son had his work mate stabbed. It happened when he stepped in, to try and help this young girl who was being beaten up by her boyfriend. Outside that new pub in the high street. The one by the church. I remember when you could walk down the high street and everyone would know you. Say hello. Not any more. No one cares for anyone but themselves. He got stabbed for doing the right thing. Straight through the heart. He died before they could get him to hospital. He was only nineteen. He had an eleven month old daughter. Just think, she’ll never ever know her dad. And why? What did he die for?
When I stop to think about it, it makes me want to cry. Its so sad what this country has become. My dad fought for this country to give us the right to live in peace. He would turn in his grave. It’s terrible. That so few people appear to have any respect for others. For human life.
When I walk the streets at night now I’m careful where I go. I don’t take chances. I won’t go out unless I have to. But I keep a canister of self defence spray, CS gas, in my hand. My boy bought it for me when he was bringing back a load of flowers from Belgium. He said he worried about me living on my own. Since his mum died. He says when he’s out there he always feels safe.. But when he gets back in the UK he’s always got his wits about him. Twice he’s had people try and force their way into his cab while he was asleep. One time they ran away, but one time they tried to attack him, drag him out of the cab and steal his rig. He had to fight them off. He hit one of them with the little fire extinguisher he keeps by his seat. Police never did a damn thing. They’re useless, too busy chasing targets and filling in forms to do real policing. He said he’d do it again if he had to. I say too right. These little bastards need a taste of their own medicine.
Lots of them, these criminals, are foreigners. Asylum seekers. They come over to this country and sponge off the state. No other country would have them. Look at France and Germany, they know how to deal with them. They’re straight out on their ear. They don’t buy houses for them. Look at what this government does. Its no wonder the crime levels increase all the time. They’re like a plague of rats filling this country up.
You’re just not safe in your home anymore. You never know when its going to be you’re time. I sleep with a knife under my bed. God help anyone who breaks into my house. Who tries to take my property. My belongings that I’ve worked all my life for. I don’t care. I’ve got no respect for them. Why should I? They’ve got no respect for me. If they want to try their luck they better be ready to pay the ultimate fucking price. Like dad used to say ‘better to be judged by twelve than carried by six’.. The bastards..
Just the thought of anyone harming my family. My kids. It makes me so angry. Angry beyond words. I won’t let it happen. I don’t care. On the eyes of my children I would do it, kill anymore who dares to hurt any of them.. You can put me in prison. Throw away the key. It doesn’t matter. I’ve had enough. I won’t live my life in fear of these fuckin’ animals. I’m prepared to stand my ground and fight.. someone needs to.. to teach these fuckin’ evil, hateful scumbags a serious lesson, once and for all… so they won’t do it again… ever...”

Nothing beats a powerful, true piece of work. To get all those thoughts in one place and structuring them well enough to make sense is quite impressive. The true picture of how one feels when you don't feel safe in your own backyard. That's scary and too show those emotions just through words - bravo. Regards, TT |

I'm sure this will appeal to grumpy old men like Givitsum who believe a suspended sentence should mean a hanging, but it is only as true as you want it to be. If you look for the bad you can find it. You have put it all together cogently and concisely and it's a clever bit of work ,as always, but it borders on propaganda which always seeks to re-frame the truth. Stuff like this always brings out the "hang 'em and flog 'em" brigade. and gives them an excuse. But as Spinoza said "You should always distrust those in whom the urge to punish is strong" And trust me it can only get worse cheers Mrs B |

I forgot to acknowledge; another successful addition to you canon of song title stories. A neat idea that could run and run. cheers Mrs B |
a few words... Written by Leo (573 comments posted) 12th August 2006 |
My intro wasn't very expansive. so just a few words. In the opening paragraph the speaker denounces hate and violence... as we go thru the piece we see fear turn to anger and some ugly prejudices surface. Then the last paragraph or so we see him espouse 'righteous' violence... My feeling is that as long as we as a species run with this tendency to rationalise our own violence, we will always be our own worst enemy....

An Englishman`s Castle... Written by woody44 (777 comments posted) 12th August 2006 |
Very emotive stuff Leo. Do we take the law into our own hands? Do we become those self-same thugs we are railing against or do we let the law, however inadequate it may seem at times, take its course? This agument will, I have no doubt, run and run, but your piece is written from the heart, and at the end of the day that is all that matters. happy writing Woody |
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! Written by Bagheera (685 comments posted) 12th August 2006 |
Cut off at the knees while in mid-rant! Start again!!! [I think I must have accidentally touched the wrong button] Is there a Catch 22 situation here? I don't mean in the original sense of the film (brilliant, light years ahead of its time!!) but in Leo's original exposé and commented on by Woody44, is there/can there ever be ANY justification for vigilante action? Because if we go down THAT road we become just as evil as the scumbags themselves ......... why am I reminded of the comic-book characteer "The Punisher" portrayed by Dolph Lundgren? And the writeups in today's newspaper about the film "Batman Begins" being shown on TV this weekend, in which Batman apparently is instrumental in reducing Gotham City to a den of thieves because that's the only way (????) he can handle the problem .... false logic here, surely!! |
Emotion-packed Time Bomb! Written by mishmish (389 comments posted) 13th August 2006 |
Wow, Leo, you didn't stop did you! This little arsenic-laced invective stormed through encapsulating those feeling of anger and prejudice. But retribution is an ugly word...I feel we should all look to find the good things in life. If we concentrate on bad, bad will promulgate and infilitrate our lives... As the great ones say: Always look on the bright side of life...da da..(oh you know it!!) Great writing Leo, as always... Best wishes mish x |

Great story Leo. The narrator's voice comes across with a great deal of authenticity, and with a passion to match. To collaborate all these various snippets of conversation into one well organised and smooth piece of literature is a great effort - you explore some heavy issues in the work also; and towards the end the narrator's words present a good argument on morality. Excellent job. A couple of typos you may like to smooth over. 'If you ask me, it’s the drugs. The(y')re all on drugs these days.' Asylum seekers. They come over to this country and sponge of(f) the state' Keep up the good work. KevG |

I can't believe someone thought this was propaganda, its clear what you were doing. The person talks about how safe the world used to be, then mentions her (is it a woman?) father who fought and may have died in the army. Not exactly safe huh? By the way, I'm in america and we hear a lot of crap about immigration too, people blame crimes on illegal mexican immigrants. In most cases I don't think its true, most of them work very hard at jobs educated citizens don't want, like construction and farm work. But it does bother me a little bit that its so easy to get into this country illegally. I've never felt the need to take rightoues vengence, but then, I've never really been hurt by anyone. I wonder if I would? Abigail |
