Chapter Three Gather round Meanwhile, the ambulance, carrying Leah’s almost lifeless body, had pulled into New York General Hospital. Waiting there at the doors was a team of nurses and Doctors. coming up quickly to whisk the gurney down the hall to the operating room. In the corner of the entrance way stood Sean, tears streaming down his face, finding comfort from her best friend Adam. Leah had known Adam since high school, and was one of the few girls in her class who didn’t want to date him. Adam was a self proclaimed “god’s gift” to women, although he had never been given much reason to think otherwise. He also had never been a fan of her choice of boyfriends; although Sean was someone he could stand most of the time. Adam took Sean by the hand, leading him as is he was a blind man. Sean might as well have been blind, only in this case it was blind with fear and tears, as they followed the gurney with Leah down the hall. He wasn’t sure what to think, not that he was thinking much at all except of the image of the girl he loved bloody and broken. Adam and Sean both feared the worst, as Leah didn’t look all to good coming in. After the gurney was wheeled past the surgery doors, they both sat on the chairs outside, both looking down at their watches as if they had nervous tick. Minute by minute flew by, each seeming an eternity long, soon the minutes spanned into hours. “Where the hell is the Doctor.,” Sean grumbled, getting almost mad with worry. “I’m sure he’ll come out soon,” Adam whispered, although he himself wasn’t sure that would actually be the case. Luckily for both their sakes, the Doctor sauntered out from behind to swinging doors and headed their way. Though, neither one was really sure if he was out there for them until he stopped inches from Sean’s feet. “Are you Mr. Parker?” he said gruffly, it seemed to both this particular Doctor was lacking in any bedside manner. “Ye-e-es” He stuttered, almost as if the Dpctor was the principle and Sean was now back in third grade. Just as the Dr. opened his mouth to speak, Sean’s eyes caught two older people walking quickly down the hall. After blinking away the tears he recognized Leah’s parents navigating the full hallways of the hospital. “Where is our Daughter?!” Her mother said breathlessly, the second that she reached them. She was a short lady, probably not more then 5’2, but she was still a fireball when she had a reason to be. Her husband on the other hand was very quiet most of the time, often leaving things up to his wife to sort out. Which considering his 6 foot, football player figure, you never would have guessed. “Your Daughter is in the recovery room, Mrs. Doreen,” The Doctor said rather shortly, “She seemed to do alright with surgery, but only time will tell if we properly cleaned up the blood hemorrhage in her brain.” All her mother could do was nod, and sit down in the chair Sean had been keeping warm. The Doctor didn’t stick around very long, soon rushing back into those revolving door. Sean looked down at her mother, tears coming down both their faces. Off in the corner Adam and her father chatted, obviously trying to keep things cheery. For once she looked so small, hopeless even, her head in her hands, hiding the tears. “Why was she even out there?!” she suddenly sobbed, calling attention of everyone in the hallway. “I don’t really know Carol,” Sean whispered, “she just seemed upset when she left the house.” Sean already felt like the whole thing was his fault, and he was sure Carol would to if she new why her daughter would go out so late on a dark country road.
