First Day of September
By Talisker
01 September 2006
Just a happy moment.  Not a common occurence for me lately - I savoured it.

Oli

I took a moment out today,

To contemplate the season

Of mellow fruitfulness.

I sat on the sleeper wall,

Warmed by the gentle sunshine,

Amongst the bees and butterflies.

Nature in all its perfection

Embraced my soul.

The afternoon was waning.

Shadows of breezy flowers

Tickled the pavement edge.

The warmth intensified

As the sun re-emerged

From behind thin cloud.

And the scene changed yet again

Impossibly beautiful.

High above my head

Swallows twittered secrets.

“Time to leave, summer’s gone

We know a horn of plenty

Beside the wide Zambezi

Flamingo kissed waters

Await our eager wings

And we are happy”.

A joyous, sated smile

Took possession of my face.

And my spirit soared

With the skylark,

Like Orpheus ascending to his heaven

Wafted on wings of gold-leaf,

To my personal Nirvana.

And I was happy.

Something a bit different you chameleon you. This was beautifully written. An evocative piece. I particularly liked the third stanza.
Keep smiling :grin

I really enjoyed reading this poem. A reminder of the wonder of being close to nature and how it can lift the spirit. It had a kind of wistful quality about it to which I could relate. You are obviously multi-talented! :)

I don't remember seeing this poem last year Oli, but have just discovered it now. I know exactly how you feel. Your words are just perfect. I've looked out of my window at the little lake in the convent grounds behind my home, with autumn colours stealing into the leaves on the tree. Wonderful. One little teenage duck (the only one that survived out of 13 because of magpies) was exercising his wings. He then ran up and down on the little bridge flapping his wings. I don't think he will make the long journey of the swallows, but just to fly over our house to the river will be a wonderful feat for him. Ahhhh - September!
