I managed to write these lines before all sharp implements were banned from my cell.

It’s nice to know there will be a good woman waiting at the gates when I am released.

I know

That the 2,000 darts

You flashed through my heart

Were your way of saying:

“I love you”

And the

Hourly phone calls

That you always ignored

Were your way of pleading

“I miss you”

And when you called the police

For some temporary release

All you were sayng

Was

“Come get me”

You shouldn’t have testified

I know you were forced

It will be rectified

In due course

They won’t give me a mirror

Put me down in solitary

But I hid some scissors

They will set me free

Once I’ve scarred on my chest

VICTORIA BEST

The whole world will know

You deserve me.

Really liked the rhythm of this. Verses 4 and 5 don't quite scan as well as the rest though.

A chilling but effective poem.

Do I recognise the style?
