This woman next to me
on the bus,
strains to read the death notices -
half expecting to see her own name

Wow. Short but very punchy. If you had put 'old' woman it would have more impact, even!!!!

I logged into this not quite knowing what to expect. It's quirky, and I like things like this that just sort of 'pop' into your head whilst you're in mundane situations like sitting on a bus.

Its a by the by comment but have you ever seen that sketch on Harry Enfield with the Old Gits reading obituaries? 
 
They sit there reading through smugly "You're dead I'm not, you're dead, I'm not" 
 
Just reminded me. But yours is much sadder with its feeling of surely life must offer me more than this?
