Lady of the lamp

A wonderful woman with thoughts for others. A person of true dedication.

                    Florence Nightingale,of nursing and health
Came from a family of considerable wealth
Compassion for soldiers, just doing their best
Angel of mercy always, nursing with zest

Ahead of her time, with a wonderful brain
She gave her life to ease horrible pain
Dedication in hospitals true to her cause
Her life an example of caring no applause

The mother of nursing, expressed in today
Books and systems her particular way
Florence a woman of stature so tall
Your life remembered, good nursing for all.

This is an excellent try at rhyme and rhythm, which I find extremely difficult to get right, Unfortunately, if you don't get it quite right, then it looks bad. May I just give a little help (meant in a kindly way):

Last line of verse 2: The rhythm's a little out of kilt. Try: She offered her care, not wanting applause.
Then last line: Your life of good nursing is remembered by all. I thought you had the words right, but not necessarily in the right order (like my piano playing).

I hope this helps - but perhaps it doesn't, ha ha.

Buchan, trivial though it may sound, I think you will find that the term for Nightingale was 'The Lady With The Lamp'. I say this not in any spirit of carping, but since the term ' Lady of the Lamp' was Victorian coinage for ..Ahem...a lady of the night.

Lovely little poem by the way. Shame to cast any aspertions.

Well done.

Slan!
