Egg Carton
By GWM

This is the first piece of work I have sent out into the ether, or anywhere for that matter. I used Neruda's poem 'Ode to Salt' as a starting point. Comments gratefully reveived.

Apologies to Pablo Neruda.

Egg Carton

This egg-less
Carton
I once saw in Sainsburys
I know
You won’t
Believe me
But….

It is now the home
Of Batman’s head,
A small stone,
A bottle cap,
A Cheerio,
Three grapes
The roll of
A dice.

The pitted brown
Cardboard
Is roughly
Smooth
To the touch
And smells?
Cardboardey.

It will become
Six volcanoes,
Or three
Brassieres.
A basket for
A hot air
Balloon.
Horses hooves.

It was the cradle for
Never-to-be
Chicks.
A safe place for
Embryonic
Omelette.
Organic, Free range
On the box
Of guilt.

I never thought I would read such a good poem about an egg carton. I don't think I actually thought I'd ever read a poem about an egg carton! The structure gives it a quiet, thoughtful tone which I like, and also conveys a certain amount of innocence. I'm not sure about the last few lines- they seem out of place with the simple observations made in the rest of the poem. Otherwise, good work- keep it up.
This is good!

Contemplative stuff. It takes the eye and mind of an artist to make the commonplace interesting.

I've often felt the guilt connection with eggs - but its not universal. I still see most of the customers at my local Tesco, happily buying the cheapest eggs, the box emblazoned with THESE ARE EGGS FROM CAGED BIRDS - by inference tortured creatures which never see the light of day. By rights the eggs should taste rotten.

I concur with Oli re the egg dilemma!
Enjoyed this, good quirky and a little bit fun, which is always nice!
Well done

Well done GWM. It does take a skill to take the apparently hum drum and turn it into something special.

At first 'cardboardy' stuck out a bit, but on second reading I thought it was most effective.
