Fear can be a paralizing thing in school. We must encourage the timid. The Fear Factor Afraid to ride the school bus Afraid to climb up high Afraid to learn arithmetic Afraid to question why. Afraid to speak to someone new Afraid to learn to swim Afraid to join that dance class Afraid to try a whim. Afraid of what's uncomfortable Afraid to try new things Without you realizing it With fear - more fear it brings As your fears go on and on If you don't face each one Your world will shrink to be really small And then your fears have won. |
Fear Written by Josie (2844 comments posted) 27th September 2006 | | The last two lines are particularly relevant to today's society. Many children do not know the freedom that we had when we were young - the freedom to go out and wander around the countryside and play in the fields without any fear whatsoever. October is walk to school month, because many children are taken to and from school and never learn road skills because of the fear parents have of letting them walk either with them or alone. They miss out on a lot. Well done! | Thanks! And I agree, they've missed out on alot. In writing this poem, I wanted to encourage those who are too timid in school to try new things, to stretch and enlarge their own little world. Thanks again! | Good! Written by Fledermaus (3487 comments posted) 1st October 2006 | | A good one. Though is it aimed at the parents or at the children? For as far as I noticed, grown-ups are scared much sooner than children. Looking back I sometimes wonder if I had any idea of height or speed when I was a kid. | Written by sueflu (18 comments posted) 1st October 2006 | | I had children in mind in writing this. Personal experience may have prompted it. Certainly not politically correct in these times to say this, but I do believe girls may be more timid than boys at age ten or eleven. Especially when alone and not with a group of peers. You may or may not agree. I do think as parents, we do get scared way before they do. But I wanted to encourage a child, boy or girl, to face each of their fears and stretch abit and enlarge their world. I appreciate your comments. Thanks! | No, sorry...enough. Written by Talisker (1331 comments posted) 11th October 2006 | I've tried - but I can't bring myself to read any more of this. Its not for kids, its for imbeciles. Just a few points - you aren't afraid "from" something. You are afraid "of" it. That is English. "Real small" - I take it you mean "really" small. Horrible American language abuse. | Thank you! Written by sueflu (18 comments posted) 11th October 2006 | | You're on a roll! But you are right about your few points. Point taken about being afraid 'of something'. The word really is correct and was on one of my copies----apparently not the final one. lol As for the other comments --- Thanks for taking the time. | DON'T BE PUT OFF BY THE MINORITY OPINIO Written by Josie (2844 comments posted) 12th October 2006 | | Please don't be put off your writing by the minority opinion on this website. Keep going because you are on here to improve YOUR writing. Read your poems to children where you live. They are your audience, and they are the ones whose opinions say it all. Good writing. |
