An Apology or Two

Never one to say “No” to a free sherry, I smiled my thanks, and offered the seat next to me to Ernie, the milkman.

“Just wanted to say hope there are no ill feelings about my forcing the issue in regard to your non payment of my milk bill,” he said, awkwardly.

“The Mrs. says that you are a person who is so important in this village, that it was wrong of me to make an enemy of you. I know you would have paid up, and to force the issue in front of Doris was not very good. I hope you will not hold a grudge.”

“How very kind of you to come here and apologise like that, Ernie, and of course I do accept your apologies. I was certainly surprised at your rather rude behaviour on that day, and especially as it was in front of my friend Doris, but I do understand. I will go back on your milk round list, if that is all right with you.”

“Sure thing, Mrs. Day. Never like to lose a customer.”

“I must admit I was a bit distracted on that day myself, and might have said things that I might have phrased differently if I had been thinking properly. So I must apologise to you too.”

“Cheers then, Mrs. D”

“Cheers, Ernie, and thanks for coming over.”

Ernie rather quickly and with evident relief at having done a job that he was required to do but had hated every minute of, left Mrs. Day’s side and went back to his friends at the bar.

Was Mrs Day mellowed by the sherry ? The lady certainly can put it away ! An admirable trait !

This contribution un-stickies what could have been a bit of a problem .

Ernie might even write an ode about it :grin
