Window on Amman
By mishmish
21 September 2006
A few weeks ago I went to Amman in Jordan on business. From my apartment window I could see an array of life before me. It inspired this piece.

Comments always appreciated.

From my window
Blue skies, stretching and endless, sandstone rooftops
Crammed with air conditioning units
Water tanks and satellite dishes

So many, all lined up
Sentries on guard
Awaiting their commands
From LEOs in the ionsphere
Bringing Eastern music
And Western chat

A cultural dichotomy
Veiled heads and Versace

Broken pavements everywhere
A dusty, valley place
Feelings of the sea being close
But just a mirage of misdirection

Car horns sound across the city
Musical tunes play
Denoting the sellers wares
Incessant, penetrating
A mobile ring tone on a loop

A woman shouts, another returns
And suddenly below
The street erupts in chatter
Gossiping, the age old habit

Cars screech to a halt
It’s lunch time
Everyone comes home
Eager and hungry
Awaiting hot bread, rice and murrag

I gaze through the window
Upon lives I do not know
Yet watching, their movements are so clear
A basic world but full of love

I feel I know them already.

I love this, I've been to Amman twice before, in my chilhood and you've described it so well! You do feel the sea close, its the humid air, yet when you look around, all you can see are the sandy buildings spread everwhere. Yet it has a strange beauty.

I love your style and how you've managed to capture the life of the city. It brought back memories.

p.s Have you tasted murrag? Hee hee, made me smile to hear it mentioned!

I, on the other hand have never been to Amman, but you do paint a good picture of a busy place. It is a much larger place than our town and so different - but I love to read about other places. Yes, a good picture painted in words. I love these pictures.

Your not a poet! But you could write wonderful prose!

Concentrate on your strengths! This is a poem wanting to be a descriptive piece of prose. Sorry.

that everyone has a bit of a poet in them and you certainly have more of the poet than most!! Once again your eye for detail stuns the reader.
well done mishmash keep writing!

All the best
