I didn't sleep last night
By Wolfie
23 September 2006
A poem born from the deep wish of true love

I was awake last night
stayed up looking at you
kept awake by your soft hair
intoxicated by your smell

I didn’t sleep last night
haunting feelings of fear kept me up
fear of loosing you
fear of closing my eyes
and finding you gone

I stayed up last night
i was watching your face
spent the time carefully
letting my eyes caress
nose, eyelids, lips, brow

I now know
every lash on your eyes
every hair on your brows
every part of your lips

So my love
if you wonder
why
i’m so tired today
why
i may look at you different
i just want you to know
it’s because I stayed up all night
i was looking at you
sleeping beside me
i was looking at you
more wonderful than any dream

a very emotional poem. A wonderful idea and sentiment for a poem. loved the last line especially. Not sure that the 'why' had to be on a seperate line? I felt this made those lines rather stunted/fragmented which was not neccessary for this type of poem i felt. But only IMO!

Enjoyed reading this

well done :)

this struck such a chord with me, resounding. i loved what you did with the first line of the first three stanzas. there's something about the meter and flow of the last two stanzas that are awkward for me. as stated in the critique above, it is a wonderful sentiment for a poem.

loved it!

How did you know?

This is one of those poems that makes me feel the writer has been loitering in my head. Have you? Go on, you can own up. 8)

It's deeply evocative, possible because it feels so personal for me.

I know very little about writing poetry but will comment on the form inspite of it. The form of the last stanza was jarring with the 'why's hanging their by themselves. I assume thats intentional. The narrator is not at their best the next morning, not feeling great, and the form shows this.

A great read - thanks.
