Cellardyke
By Talisker
26 September 2006
Inspired by two very different things:
(1) The dead swan (bird flu) found at Cellardyke recently
(2) Thomas Gillespie's short story "The Fair Maid of Cellardykes" (1857)

Oli.

Bonnie swan o’ Cellardyke,

For why return?

Wast for a pretty maiden swan,

Your heart did yearn?

Amang the dunes o’ Cellardyke,

Ye sighed yer last,

Wast your last earthly thocht a dream,

O’ love long past?

Fife’s pretty coast is painted now,

In shades o’ red,

As day retires and weary sun,

Is put to bed.

The shallows like quicksilver gleam,

Across the bay,

As sacred night her blanket casts,

O’er blessed day.

Aside the tiny parish kirk,

A humble stone,

“Beneath this rock two lovers sleep,

Of name unknown”.

“Amang the dunes o’ Cellardyke,

They sighed their last,

Each tangled body clinging to,

The other fast”.

If you should visit Cellardyke,

Recall this tale,

E’en in the very face of death,

Love's power prevails.

I'm not familiar with, 'The Fair Maid of Cellardykes,' but I don't think it's essential to appriciate the poem. Firstly, I loved the sound this makes as it rolls around the tongue. Certainly one to be read aloud. Loved the third and fourth verses. Simple, but beautifully descriptive and balanced.

Ending reminded me a little of 'The Highwayman,' one of my favourites.

Yet another Oli.

Keep them coming.

All the best,

Phil.
