Purple Ronnie Named Laureate
By Talisker
27 September 2006
The news that Purple Ronnie is to be the new Poet Laureate has received a mixed reception in UK literary circles.  The world’s top selling wordsmith, Ronnie has racked up sales of 34 million greetings cards and 16 million books of his verse. He thus easily outsells the ousted Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion, who has sold only 17 books since being named as the successor to Ted Hughes in 1999.  Hughes had sold only 7 books during his tenure.

In his official acceptance speech, Ronnie, real name Giles Andreae said of  Motion;

“Andrew he is very sad,

His tears would fill the ocean,

I write my poems in the loo,

Now I’ve pushed out a Motion”

Royal artist, Rolf Harris, was quoted as saying;

“This accolade is very well deserved for Ronnie.  We have a lot in common – he is better than Shakespeare and I am better than Michelangelo”.

Oli, at last! A dud verse. Still, you had to dumb it down, so it doesn't count.

Funny. Sad that most people would probably think he was better than Shakespeare.

All the best,

Phil.
Sorry

Sorry Oli, but I haven't got the faintest clue who you're on about. Except Rolf of course.

I love poetry that moves one to tears...however this was still a nice piece Oli. I once had a go at card writing, and got one accepted for eighty quid! That was several years ago and the money has nearly all gone...

happy writing
