Down to Earth

A story for junior school aged children to use as a prelude to talking about issues around equality and diversity.

Have you ever noticed how strange people can be?

Of course, I’m not talking about you and me.
Some folks are tall
and some are small
Some are bright and some are dim
Some are fat and some are thin

Well, let me tell you a story about a lad named Bob
And his sister Louise

One winter’s night, after tea, Bob searched the night skies
His new telescope was ace!
His eye roamed the myriad of Galaxies,
outer space!

Alone thought Bob, but was it true?
One ...  no, two strange lights came into view.
And streaked across the inky blackness
Alien spacecraft, UFOs.
Little did he know
they contained INFOZILLIONS from the planet Data,
their destination: Earth

Why were they descending at such a rate?

Simple, their Database was out of date.
Especially the section marked The Human Race.
They needed to find out what makes them tick,
Why they are so feeble and get so easily sick,
And look so ugly and thick.

Bob could not believe his eyes.
He rushed off to tell Louise,
“Hey Lou!” he cried
“You’ll never guess what I just spied”
“A UFO!”

Lou, had no time for games,
“Give it a rest!”
“It’s about time you had an eye test!
This Galactic stuffs not for me,
I’m off to watch TV”

As their ship came down,
dawn broke through the starry night,
bathing the land in an eerie light.
On and on they flew,
observing strange shadowy shapes
until, to their surprise, buildings came into view.
then a sign post that said

Sedgewick Drive

And Bob lived at number 25.

Let me tell you about Infozillions
That landed in Bob and Lou’s Garden
They are a funny bunch
Their names where
Commander Ver - Ball (the leader)

Sema4,

Glitch,

and Grunch

Funny names I agree, but don’t be mistaken one bit
They’re strong and handsome and incredibly fit.
In fact they have never been known to be ill
They live for a very, very long time
And have all kinds of amazing skills.

The Commander said:
“It can not wait,
we must start the Human Update.”
Three arms and a forth eye
What a guy!
And don’t take him as a fool
This alien though he was really cool

“We need live specimens so we can learn more”

and with that, they crept creepily up to Bob’s Door.

The next thing Bob heard was a tap, tap, taping sound
He was amazed to see four aliens floating
Four feet off the ground.

“Come quick   - ALIENS!”  Shouted the lad
But no one would listen,
Not Bob’s Mum or Bob’s Dad.

“Quite Normal” explained Sema 4
As he firmly closed the bedroom door
“Most of your people can’t see
things so different as the Commander and me”
With brains that small,
I am quite suprised they can do any thing at all.”

“That’s enough of your insults,” said Bob
“If you don’t mind, I’m going to bed”
“No that’s fine,” said the Commander,
“Go right ahead”
So now they had one at close range
They could begin to find out what makes Humans so very strange.

Only two arms, two legs and two tiny eyes

A puny body, not much of a size
“Do you know what?” said Verbal with some dismay
“Theses creatures sleep for eight hours a day”

Bob slept his eight hours
Got up, had a shower
And the Aliens tormented him some more
First it mad him mad,
then it made him sad
Would no one else see these Aliens four?
Or their ship with the gigantic satellite dish?
Well later that morning Bob got his wish.

Bob ran off to school and the Aliens followed him there.
Soon a crowd of children gathered to stare.
Well what would you do,
If you arrive at school and found four Aliens there?

“Look at those wierdos!” said a brave boy called Greg
“That one’s got Disgusting purple skin
and a boil on his leg”

Suddenly Commander Verbal took off
Like a rocket above the hostile crowd
Bob knew what to expect and shouted out loud
“Watch out! They can do more”
One by one the other Infozillions
Shot up from the floor.

They put on an aerobatics display
After this, young Greg
Didn’t know what to say
Whizzing back and forth they went
Making a joyful sound
They flew over the playground

Watching the children and their games
Watching to see if they could do the same.
There was Annie climbing the giant frame.

Tom did handstands here and there
and one that showed breathtaking flare
Was Emma, doing wheelies in her wheel chair

The Aliens were impressed by the skills
Of the boys and the Girls
But it wouldn’t last long
Soon came the school bell
Rung by Mrs O’Dell
Who couldn’t even seen the Aliens’ games
They all agreed it was such a shame.

Once in the classroom the Aliens sit at the back
Ready to learn more about their new friends
Grunch sets a challenge to a boy called Jack
To take the teacher’s chalk from her desk without leaving
his seat
Grunch shows first how to do it
By extending hid extraordinary arms across the room
– what a treat!

But Jack was quick
And Jack was slick
He and Bob would show the Aliens this time
That they had brains too
By passing the chalk from kid to kid down the line.

“These Humans are slow and rather small
But what great co-operation!”
Said the Aliens all.

“Not a bad bunch” declared Gruch
“Now can we have Lunch?”

Both Aliens and Humans were in for surprises
In the crowded dining hall
Were children of all shapes and sizes
Eating and drinking with their mouths as a rule
The Aliens you see,
Could eat through their knee
And drink with their fingers or shoe
What an odd thing to do!

Later that day
The children put on a play
With the help of their new friends from afar.
And the Mums and Dads came in their cars.

The play was about difference.
And what makes us the same
They agreed that when people are aren’t caring
It is such a shame.
However different we are, there was to be found
Some true common ground.

There was cheering and clapping when the curtain came down
But there was sadness soon after the show
The aliens had to report on what they had found
So they announced that they had to go.

There wasn’t a dry eye
When the Aliens said goodbye
Everyone had a good cry

“There is so much more to learn
So we promise to return” said Ver-bal
Have no fear!
But you will all have to wait
until next year”

Then off they flew
Perhaps next time they will land
In a garden near you!

Thanks for your review.

I'm not competent to comment on work of this nature so I asked my wife who is a very experienced Primary School Teacher.

Her only remarks were that it would have to be read to the children, and read well; for a poor Orator would lose their attention

Year 6 at a stretch year 5 but no younger would be ideal targets.

Don't shoot the messenger,

Brian
