Removing tops 'not sexist'

Jack Straw announces that he asks Muslim women to lift their veil at his constituency clinics

Maverick Scottish MP Dougal Connelly yesterday revealed in a dinner speech that he asks female constituents to remove their tops when talking to him.  "Seeing women wearing blouses or even thick jumpers makes it very difficult for me to communicate with them." he said in a speech at the annual Scottish Working Man's Club Beer and Tatties Evening.

"I understand that culturally women may prefer to hide their boobs, but this is, after all, a man's world, and women should be sensitive to the traditions expected by men.  And if they have nothing to hide, what possible objection could they have?"

He rejected allegations that he was a sexist.  "People always cry 'sexist' as a way of refusing to discuss what is an important issue in social relationships.  In this Patriarchal society women's refusal to go bare-chested throws up a barrier between them and, say, builders or road-workers.  I would have no objection if a woman requested me to remove my kilt.  In fact, I would encourage it."

Irony

I'm not sure if muslim women are that touchy about their veils, but he clearly made a point. I wonder if there'll be comlaints of people who don't get the irony.
As a Scotsman...

Why pick on us - Jack Straw isn't a Scot!

I find this a tad offensive as it is insulting to Scots. The UK media already portrays us as violent drunks. Now you've got us as sexist, kilt-wearing tattie munchers too -gies a break!

Apologies

I chose a Scot because there is currently a Scottish MP (who shall remain nameless) who is definitely not in any way embroiled in a sex scandal, and any allegations to the contrary by certain tabloids is in no way justified.

I felt that inventing a Scottish MP rather than naming one might indirectly suggest him without opening me up to a libel suit.

If it offended, I am truly sorry. My ancestors were of Scottish stock, and the Scots are as fine a race of men as ever chased a haggis round a hillside.

Crivens. I shall have to dig out my old Sunday funnies and read Oor Wullie as a penance.

Too ' King's English' to deliver the line.

Couch it in patois/slang and its my guess you will have one that hits the G spot.

Good try.

I can see from both sides of this - I'm half Iraqi, half Glaswegian, ha ha!
It could be insulting to Scots, but I don't think thats what you were aiming at, so you're off the hook for now ;)

You also seem to be one of the few people who has grasped the concept of the veil, and I thank you for that!
So many poeple see it as an opressive thing, and its nice to see someone understand it for a change.

Nice work

Unreservedly! I take it you refer to a (the) member of Solidarity.

I like the man actually, regardless of his aleged sexual peccadillos - he is a man of principle - which I fear is more than one can say for many luminaries in the major parties.

If you watch one TV drama in the coming week, make it Question Time from Glasgow next Thursday - when our Thomas will give the doubters on the panel a very hard time I expect.

Oh, Funny piece by the way - keep up the writing!

Oli.

Crikey, what a lot of fuss. I liked it. (My Scottish half was not offended -although my Yorkshire side wished he had been.)

Funny.

I think it was funnier with him being a Thistle-arse to be honest snodlander. Well thought of and well executed.
