Sorry I couldn't avoid this. One thing that the Romans should have adopted from the defeated druids was the habit of going barefooted. Cos their Sandals chafed and rubbed and caused all sorts of foot complaints including bunions. That probably explains the otherwise inexplicable fall of the Roamn Empire-bad feet. Pretty Boy Siddie. |

Pretty Boy Siddie | Nothing Written by Snodlander (507 comments posted) 13th October 2006 | | I always ascribe it to the fact that the Romans didn't discover the number zero. Hence their numbering system did not scale well. So as their empire grew they simply couldn't keep count of all the stuff they had, including the huge number of sandals their army required. | Good point Written by BrianRobertNeal (1195 comments posted) 13th October 2006 | That probably explains decimation. They're counting how many soldiers they've got left after a battle. When the number got too cumbersome they'd knock off whatever they had left over. | Socks. Written by cynicsid (177 comments posted) 13th October 2006 | The Romans were swept aside by the Ostrro and Visi-Goths. Who in addition to the use of the stirrup had adopted the use of Socks. The Romans had noticed this practice but considered it effeminate. Thus Tacitus' lament, "But for a pair of socks an Empire was lost" However the Byzantines wore exceptionally heavy socks which slowed them down and set them up to be wiped out by the bare-footed Ottomans. What goes round come round. |
