The Early Bird

I attended a work-shop on found poetry some months back. At the time, I felt out of place and stupid: I didn't really understand much of the content and it occurred to me during the course of the workshop that I really like reading poetry a lot more than hearing lectures about how it can be written.  We did an exercise that consisted of writing down random words found in various dictionaries and reference books, then composing a poem using those words. This 'poem' was based on that exercise. I'm not sure I followed the rules correctly, though. . .

T H E     E A R L Y     B I R D

They’ll tell you kid, like they told me

That it’s the early bird that gets the worm.

Sometimes it’s true, this pearl of wisdom they trot out

You see them in the garden, now

and then, all preening, strutting pride

These round and fluffy avian gourmets

Pek-pekking at the ground so earnestly

To gain that worm!

That slippy-slimy A.M. taste-treat that

is theirs to pluck in morning’s dew and haze.

But just consider this --

(It’s just as true

But something that they tend to hide from you) --

Sometimes it is the worm that gets the bird.

Especially liked the end of this.

Inspiration from random words? Interesting concept.

All the best,
Phil.

Years ago I went to a workshop such as this. The woman got us all to write a word on a piece of paper and throw it into the middle of the room, then try to make a poem from it. Well, in this workshop it didn't work at all. What came out of it was unintelligible rubbish, ha ha. But I think that when you write on a particular topic, it's a good idea to think of all the words concerned with the topic and write them down, (and in my case rhyming words) - leave it to stew overnight, and then, waking fresh, see what comes forth. I did this actually before writing "Tragedy at Mini-Beastie Hall" - which, if you haven't read it, you might like to. I like your imagery but you tackled it in quite a different way to how I would have done it. This is the nice thing about having diverse poets on this website. It would be so boring if everyone wrote alike. Well done.
