I Close my Eyes
By sallyj
14 October 2006
this emerged from a ten minute writing exercise based on listening

I close my eyes against the stark power of the sun
Whose ceaseless burn assaults my heat seared skin
Children’s voices in the distance tell of surf-side fun

I hear the constant hiss-suck of wavelets, out then in
The screen of my closed eyelids shows a summer scene
Bold swimmers, bright sailboats, sand play, banter ‘twixt kith and kin

The scene recedes; the picture forms now shades of woodland green
What was the sound of water becomes the tune of shivering leaves
Silver birch, whispering beech, branches lit by twilight’s blue grey sheen

Outside my fast closed doors the March wind swirls and heaves
I feel the coal’s warmth brush soft against my cheek
My eyelids flutter as I chase the dreams I weave

Since blindness freed me from reality, so often harsh and bleak,
To see just what I want to see, to track down any vision that I seek

I love your writing

I have enjoyed reading this. Like Patterjack's poem, the imagery leaps from the page. I love so many of your phrases, especially "the tune of shivering leaves" and the short sharp images on the line which starts: Bold swimmers, bright sailboats etc. I was so sorry that blindness freed reality. I can't imagine how awful that must be, and hope it isn't really you.

Just checked your profile. Quite a while since you've posted. A welcome return, I'd say.

You built the images in this very well.

All the best,

Phil.

A beautiful rhythm, immensely descriptive of both emotion and scene AND unforced rhyming pattern - very well written.
Best wishes
Jay
