Next bit!

“Ello tart,” I giggled as the door opened and held out my arms for a hug.

“God I’ve missed you,” she squealed as she squeezed me tight.

Heidi was my best friend from way back.  We grew up together.  We went to the same schools, primary and secondary, dealing with all life threw at us in our own unique way; which we affectionately called the Heilia way.  We faced so much together…the trials of growing up, boys, exams and then life in the big wide world.  We even got a poky 2 bed flat together.  We proved inseparable.  That is until I moved to Ireland.  I needed a new start.  I liked Ireland.  I had spent a few holidays over there with Mum, Dad, Steve and Nan.  Besides, I’d been accepted to a prestigious music school in Belfast.

Although not my real family, they had never treated me any differently to their natural son, and for that I was grateful.  I never felt the outcast, never felt like ‘the lodger’, though in the early days Steve did try his best to make me feel that way!  Didn’t take long for him to accept me though and soon he was the big brother every girl dreamed of.  He was supportive, caring, protective but not controlling, and my best friend.

Heidi ushered me through the door and into her lounge.  She made us both drinks and we sat there, nattering away like there was no tomorrow.

“Seems ages since we last spoke!”

“Last week chick,” I giggled.

“Like I said, ages!  So what’s happening?  Are you moving over here?  Have you found a place to live yet?”

“Yes and Yes.”

She clapped her hands excitedly.  “Is it a permanent stay?”

“I don’t know,” I answered truthfully.  “I have tickets to fly home tomorrow evening, I have to sort a few things out over there before I come back, and my flat over here has a lease for a year, but whether I’ll stay longer remains to be seen, depends how things pan out.”

She knew what I meant and nodded slowly.  “Have you, y’know, got a plan yet?

Almost 7 years since I moved away, yet it was like I never left.  We chatted endlessly about our lives, the different directions we had taken, and moaned about men and money.  It was just like we were 18 year olds in that poky flat above the chippie again.

Hopping out of the taxi, we joined the queue to get into The Pink Pineapple; a club recommended to me by Heidi, she’d apparently been there a lot.  One by one the people before us went in, and suddenly it was us facing the bouncers.  Heidi and I were both frisked pretty thoroughly before we were allowed in, sexual connotations and innuendo flowing from her mouth like a river.

We walked down the big black spiral staircase to the basement, and was met by loud, banging music, lots of gyrating bodies, and loads of smoke.  The music was good, and I found myself tapping my hand on my hip in time to the beat.

“Right, first round is on me,” I yelled, as I grabbed her hand and we weaved through a mass of bodies to the bar.  Giggling like schoolgirls we sat down on barstools and looked through the cocktail menu, our eyes fighting the haze of smoke to see.

We must have been there about 3 hours when Heidi tapped my arm.  .”Over there, 12 o’clock.  Mine’s the blond.”

I looked in the direction she was gesturing in.  Four guys were fighting their way through the crowds, just like we had when we came in.  “Hmmmm yeah they are pretty nice.”  My eyes focused and locked on one in particular.  He was tall, about 6’ish I’d guess as he didn’t look quite as tall as Steve with his 6’2 stature.  He was very slim, and looked around my age.

I watched this guy as he walked, with a couple of friends, to a table near me at the back of the bar.  I was vaguely aware of Heidi talking to me but I was too busy looking, no staring at this guy who had somehow captivated my attentions.  He looked over and our eyes met.  He smiled at me and I could feel myself beginning to blush.  I’d been caught out.

I looked down at my drink and turned my head to Heidi, who was babbling on, I don’t even think she knew I hadn’t been listening.

“Another drink?”

I woke up the following morning to a shaft of bright light falling across my face and pillow.  I stretched my legs from their curled position, and felt something in my bed.  Something hard, and warm.  It wasn’t something, it was someone.  This wasn’t my room I thought as I opened my eyes properly, panicking slightly.  My head banged and the room spun when I moved, but I had to see who I was next to.  Gingerly I turned over and looked into the most adorable face.  His dark hair was tousled, and sticking up in places.  His long dark eyelashes lay on chiselled cheekbones, his skin a healthy shade of pink.  It was that guy, the one from the club.  What was I thinking?  I didn’t do this type of thing, I was a decent, respectable girl who shied away from men.  Still, he was gorgeous.  I leant over him and lay a gentle kiss on his lips, which, in turn, woke him from his sleep, and turned into something longer.

Two months later I had settled into my new pad.  I’d had my furniture back home shipped over, and after a few discrepancies with the haulage company over breakages and scratches on things, I was finally settled.  Now I could concentrate on what I was here for.

“Hello?”  I said as I answered the phone.

“Hey girl, you ok?”

“Yeah fine thanks H, you?”

“Yeah fine ta.  Listen I’m off to a gig tonight, and the girl I was going with has let me down so I have a ticket going spare.  You got anything planned?”

“No nothing planned, just a bubble bath and my friend the galaxy bar.”

“”Wanna come with me?”

“Who you seein?”

“Well you remember Jon?”

“That guy from the club? Yeah vaguely.”

“Well he has a group.  That guy you went off with that night, he must know about it, they are mates after all.”

“I haven’t seen him since.  Just can’t pull em like you can babe.”  I laughed, as did she.

“So you gonna come?”

“You know me, up for anything!”

“Fab, it’ll be a laugh.  Can you be here by about three?”

“Sure no worries.”

“Great I’ll see you then!  Bye hun.”

“Laters.”

I stood outside the arena, with Heidi, eating a burger and sharing some chips.  It was beautifully warm and I could feel the heat permeating my skin.  As I sat on my jacket that I had laid on the ground munched away at my food, I wondered if Steve was working or whether it was his day off.

“You know, it always amazes me the amount of people that get here so early,” I said thoughtfully.

“You finished yet?  We can go in!”

“Huh?”

“I got VIP tickets.  He wouldn’t give me just ordinary ones would he?  Come on!”  She grabbed my hand and pulled me up, and towards the doors.  I dusted myself off as she fished for the access passes, which we promptly showed to the doorman.  He eventually let us in but not before he had cast his suspicious eyes over both of us.

Heidi squealed as we stood in the foyer between the backstage area and the concert area.  “This is so cool.  I’ve never been this far into an arena before, it’s exciting.”

My brother works here, I’ve seen everywhere.”  I saw her raise her eyebrows at me.  “But I’ve never been backstage at an event before.”

“Your bro works here?”

“Yeah he’s the manager.”

“Ooooooh exciting!  I bet you could get back here at the drop of a hat!”

“Maybe,” I replied, “but I’m not gonna ask, I don’t think it’s fair.”

“Oi!”

I turned around and smiled. “Speak of the Devil,” I muttered, to which Heidi giggled.

“So he’s the brother then?”

“Yep.”

“Wouldn’t have recognised him.  He’s fit.”

“And taken.”

Steve jogged up to us.  “What you doing here sis?”  He hugged me and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek.

“You remember Heidi?  She got some VIP tickets for tonight’s gig and asked me if I wanted the other ticket.  So here I am.”

He turned to Heidi and his eyes widened.  “Wow girl you’ve changed, I didn’t recognise you!  What happened to the dumpy bespectacled kid my little sister went to school with?!”

“Well I could ask what happened to the spotty gangly beanpole I knew,” she cheekily replied.

I laughed at this little exchange; they had always ribbed each other to bits, and it had always been amusing to say the least.

“Wish I could stop babe but I’m snowed under.  My desk looks like someone’s emptied a filing cabinet on it.”

“God forbid we should keep you from your work Steven,” Heidi purred.

“No chance!  Unless you got Laurel hidden under that excuse for a skirt.”

Heidi looked at me enquiringly.

“His floozy.”

She nodded.  “Gotcha.”  Grabbing my arm she started to pull me in the direction of the chill out rooms behind the auditorium.  “Come on chick lets go!”

We waved at Steve as we went in our separate directions, Heidi giggling like a schoolgirl.

“This must be it,” she said as she squeezed my hand excitedly.  She knocked 3 times on the door, and waited.  And waited.  No reply.  She knocked again, only louder.  Still no reply.

Dropping her hand, I stood with my ear pressed against the cool wood.  “I might be able to hear something,” I explained.

The door handle tuned, and I quickly straightened myself up as the door opened.  A blond guy, about 5’ 9ish answered.  He had the most gorgeous eyes I had ever seen and when he smiled, oh my.  He held out his arms and Heidi flew into them.  So this must be Jon.

“Heidi it’s only 10 days since you saw him, put him down girl,” I laughed as she continued to eat his face.

Jon laughed.  “So you must be the famous Ce.  I’ve heard a lot about you.”  He extended his hand in greeting.  I clasped it lightly and he brought my hand to his lips and kissed it.

“Yep that’s me,”  I giggled.

“Come in girls, take a seat.  Drinks?”

I heard a door open and a male cough.  “Jon who are you…”

He stopped dead.  It was that guy, from the club, the one I took home and had…fun with.  He had just got out the shower by the looks of it, his skin held that wet sheen, his modesty wrappped up in a pale blue towel tied around his toned waist.  I was fascinated, held mesmerised by the tiny droplets of water dripping from his fringe, landing lightly on his face, running down his cheeks and…

“CE!”

Heidi shook me from my reverie.

“Drink?  Jon asked you if you’d like one.”

“Oh, er, yes please, anything cold’s great.”

“More like you need a cold shower,” she whispered.  “It’s him init?  The one you - shall we say...bedded.”

I just nodded dumbly as I watched him walk back to what I assumed was a dressing room.  In my alcohol induced foggy headed state that night, or that morning, I hadn’t realised just how cute he was.  Had he recognised me?
