Castaway
By Don_Quixote
23 October 2006
a childhood memory

Castaway

Whenever I hear the tram's bell
(background music along the promenade)
I think of my father as a younger man
running beside me on the beach
steadying the saddle
before launching me for a solo ride.

On that brand-new bicycle
I wobbled uncertainly
as he called "Don't stop pedalling"

When I looked back
he was nowhere to be seen:
there was only the future.

Beautiful and arresting. This really touched me somewhere.

If the rest of your writing is as good as this, I look forward to more.

All the best,

Phil.

this is what poetry is all about. You've created something quite extraordinary here. I also look forward to reading more of your work. The last line is still repeating itself in my thoughts and I can't help but read it more than once. Simply brilliant.

All the best

I have only just read this - and your other poem and a few of your other pieces. I like both poems very much and can understand why you might be critical of my poetic efforts.
