I'm not really sure what goes in this section (my first time in here). Do i have to be funny? This is really just letting off a bit of steam because sometimes, i just don't get it!
The government has finally conjured a plan for cracking down on unruly youths by conglomerating with the heads of schools. Last week the plan was executed, and the first youth were castigated on school grounds. The charge? His pack lunch box broke the governments ‘healthy eating’ law.
The ten year old was pulled away from his classmates in the school dining hall when it became clear that his pack lunch contained more than two snacks, the most offending of which was a fromage frais. Thankfully the headmaster had stepped in and removed the offending item, as well as the offending boy from his peers before the situation got out of hand. The headmaster was asked to comment on the situation:
‘This is where it begins I’m afraid. The rules are clearly stipulated and I will have neither parent nor child breaking them under my roof. It’s only a fromage frais now, but should I have let it continue without harsh consequences, in ten years schools will be full of sugar fuelled, fat rebellious children. I will not be responsible for the demise of our society.’
The ten year old was too upset to comment, the parent was too angry. The child will appear in court later on in the month.
Later that day, a teen was caught smoking cannabis and obscenely taunting passers by in school grounds. The headmaster assured it would be dealt with, but he ‘can only deal with one problem at a time.’
It is certainly comforting to know someone has the wellbeing of our children in mind, and their priorities in order.

A most welcome new addition to the fold, gill. This forum needs some new blood. I definitely got the impression their was a bit of genuine emotion behind this. The funny thing is you think you are being really outrageous and find a few weeks later it's actually happened. And as you, sourly note their priorities are in order- they just never say what order Nice bit of vented spleen BBS |

BRN dare not come on this website cos he's upset the Pope. So on his behalf might I add the following, if it were not so tragic it would be funny. We seem to be gripped in some Calvinistic Puritan Revival. It's not that the lunatics are running the assylum, they've got out and burnt it down. There's an intolerance growing in our society but it's usually targetted against those who aren't going to riot or kick up a fuss. So hard luck fatties and smokers, but who's next? | Hi Gill: Ah, here you are now! I guess this is the section when you follow up news? I felt exactly as you do when I heard the news. The world has gone completely mad. Did you read my poem about "No to Healthy Eating?" The children from our local grammar school decide for themselves what they eat at Tesco's supermarket each lunch-time, with no headmaster about. I think I would have been absolutely mad if I had been the mother of the child above. I do agree that there should be a return to healthy eating, but this was absolutely stupid. Well done you for bringing the matter up again. |

I enjoyed your entry into this section. I'm not too sure about your use of the word conglomerating in the first sentence. It sort of sounds wrong for some reason. But the gist of your story is basically true, isn't it? Everybody is deciding that healthy eating is a matter for compulsion. My background is dietetics, and I can remember teaching a group of student nurses way back in 1965 that a very healthy diet would be a hamburger, with ketchup on, carrot sticks and apple and a glass of milk (not coke). I also am of the opinon that chips, if they are cooked well in oil that hasn't been reused and heated too hot for ages, are good for you. And having had a child who was very awkward about eating, I brought him home for lunch every day when he was in primary school and made him chips as well as something else like a scrambled egg. And I don't feel in any way I was wrong in my thinking. |
Stay positive... Written by gerardconnolly (1186 comments posted) 24th October 2006 |
Hello Gill. Well done. Funny...Yes. Rants are always funny. But my advice would be not to listen to the embittered voices of the clapped out tub thumpers. Our society is no worse than any other and in many ways a great deal better. You have youth on your side. And you can go out and make that difference even more positive. I've never known an age when so many young people went abroad to assist aid projects or campaigned so hard for the environment. Not just young people either. By way of which do take a look at Josie's thoughtful piece on Slavery. Leave those who haven't got a life to their whinging. You are too good to fall into that trap... Slan! |

But Not "Not News" - thats five in a row! I thought everyone had grasped the concept of satirical news. I may have to post something to get this back on track! You have all been warned! Oli |

Not 'Not News' perhaps - but I still enjoyed it Gill. All the best, Phil. |

Sorry for the mix up, clearly i have not grasped the concept of 'not news' and after reading through many others i feel i still haven't....oh well! Thank you all for reading and reviewing my 'rant' anyway. Jane- There is real emotion behind this. There are children today with real problems, that need to be helped, which often schools turn a blind eye to. How something as trivial as this gets into our international news is beyond me. Josie- yes healthy eating is a must, but a line has to be drawn somewhere surely? No but i'll get on and read that poem now. Read your non-fiction piece however, was great. Evoked too much emotion in me to allow me to comment concisely though Jean- you are right! All in moderation. We seem to live in a world of black and white now. Where's the middle ground gone? Gerard- haha you are perhaps onto something there. I must keep my cynicism in check! Really though, i cannot keep up my cheery demeanor always. Sometimes things just have to be said. Oil- Sorry! I shall bashfully retreat......

I am shocked and stunned to learn that this is not 'Not News.' Does that mean that this actually happened? Clearly I have not been following the news closely enough. If this did happen (I am still not prepared to believe that it did), these people would have a field day at my kids' school -- they wouldn't know where to start! And they would have keeled over in horror at the ghetto school where my mother used to teach, where the luckiest children were sent to school on a breakfast of packaged cakes and coca-cola. Please tell me: did this happen? |

Well i over exaggerated and was being mildly sarcastic but yes it did. A ten year old was pulled from his school dining hall and made to eat with the headteacher for breaking new 'healthy eating' laws. Apparently children are not allowed more than two snacks in their lunch boxes and they have to be low in sugar and salt or something. Fromage frais has sugar in it and he had more than two snacks. The story differed a little between papers but that was the gist. As you can imagine the child was probably humiliated and the parent outraged. I'm all for healthy eating, but i feel it was taken too far. There are more important things for a headmaster to put energy into. |

I think, I think... He became like that because of the school meals! If he wasn't forced to eat fromage frais, he wouldn't have had those problems I blame it all on Jamie Oliver |
