Burning Our Kids Future : For the Conspicuous Consumption Classes
By John_O
24 October 2006
This piece was rattling around in my head as I drove down to visit my family last weekend. Its my take on how our green and pleasant world is being used up by just ordinary folk going about their ordinary lives, basically by burning their kids future - oil reserves.
Think Texan accent whilst reading it, that's how it sounded in my head as I wrote it.

Hey I’m single and fancy free
Think I’ll buy a big Hum Vee
It does just ten Em Pee Gee
That’s okay, I’ll plant a tree
While I’m burning your kid’s future

Got a wife and kids now, one, two, three
Guess I need an Ss U Vee
It does fifteen Em Pee Gee
So it’s okay, I’ll plant a tree
Just burning my kids future

Don’t want my kids to suffer educationally
So I gotta buy a nice Rr Vee
Take ‘em out and tour our country
While we’re there we’ll plant a tree
Happy burning my kids future

Brought a condo by the sea
Real nice place in Miami
Turn that aircon down another degree
Phew, way to hot to plant a tree
Comfy burning our kids future

Gee its cold, just sixty degree
Turn up the heat so I can wear a tee
Gas so cheap it’s almost free
Brrr, much to cold to plant a tree
Snugly burning our kids future

Kids are grown, now we’re free
Take a vacation, Euro Disney
Flying club that’s the way yessirree
Might have the time to hug a tree
Oh yeah burning our kids future

Could go green and follow Arnie
Get a car that runs on electricity
Not too sure that’s for me
But I sure do like that nice tree
Thoughtfully burning our kids future

Now I’m old, turning seventy
Aircons broke, no more Cee Fff Cee
Lights gone out, no more electricity
Far too late to plant a tree
Cos we all burnt our kids future

How right you are

My goodness you have put some thought into this poem! And how right you are. So I may see things from another angle, but when people say: "We have a couple of kids, so we need a big car" I remember my grandparents who brought up 7 daughters (one after the other) with nothing but 2 feet, and they didn't need food brought in from overseas because they grew what they ate in their garden. By the way, every one of the girls lived into their 80s, so they didn't really suffer because their parents hadn't burned up fuel in a 4x4. I'm surprised you haven't had more response to your well thought out poem!

Thanks for the comments. I don't write much poetry but this one was just ready to roll, so out it came. For me the last line is the key one, we in the Western world are going through our natural resources faster and faster and this can't go on. We could be the generations that really do use up our kids inheritance. Time to start changing our life styles, time to 'plant that tree'.
