Abstinence
By francoise
31 October 2006
A close call with infidelity. The idea came to me about an hour ago, so this is a quick piece of freeverse. Any comments appreciated (and if it makes sense or not!)
Thanks
Fran

When we sat and talked last night
I got drunk
On a line you will never hear from me.

It started with this inebriated idea of
what didn't happen when you looked at me,
As I pretended not to see.

I couldn't walk straight on that line
Though I wanted to complete the night with it.
I had the trajectory of your heart  mapped out
But it unsteadied me
with its toxicity.

And hanging over me now,
Is the abstinence from being held close.
A dull ache I can't bear feeling this morning.

I think you've got the kernel of something good here. I can see where you're coming from but it does, for me, need a bit of editing and refining to make it that much mroe powerful. I particularly liked the third stanza.

With Elli on this one all the way. There is something inside this that hints at something special. For me, some of the earlier ideas need a little more clarity - or perhaps I'm dense. The last verse worked best for me.

All the best,

Phil.

It does need editing, particular with the first two stanzas, and a tighter structure perhaps.
The third and last stanza works best for me too.

Thankyou for seeing the potential in it!
