IS HRITHIK ROSHAN REALLY A SUPERHERO? With the super success of KRRISH, the pair of father Rakesh Roshan and son Hrithik has given three consecutive hits. A hattrick! Indeed the phenomenal success of this duo has rewritten a new leaf in Bollywood with KRRISH! However, what is most surprising about Hrithik’s superhero status is “that he can only give hit films with his father as the director,” analyses a veteran filmmaker from Bollywood. No wonder, the dozen odd films that Hrithik has done in his ever since his debut KAHO NAA…PYAR HAI in 2000, has seen just three hit films. Is Hrithik really a superhero??? Superstars like Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Rajendra Kumar (better known as Jubilee star), Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir-Shah Rukh-Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan have enormous track record of hits under their belt over the years with various directors of repute, unlike Hrithik! In six long years, Hrithik has managed to create euphoria at the box-office only with his father. We take a look at Hrithik’s rise and how much he really commands at the box-office! Having started his career as child artist o\in films like AAP KE DEEWANE, AASHA and BHAGWAN DADA in 1980, Hrithik assisted his father as Associate Director in KARAN ARJUN (1995) and KOYLA (1997). Having learnt the technicalities of filmmaking, Hrithik was launched with Amisha Patel in papa Roshan’s KAHO NAA…PYAR HAI in 2000! The film became a big hit with the fresh romantic pair and Hrithik was born like any other star sons. The success of Hrithik at the box-office made every filmmaker in Bollywood to sign this new sensational hero. In 2000, Hrithik was on a signing spree and he signed almost a dozen films left, right and center, without even blinking his eyes for good scripts! What followed KAHO NAA…PYAR HAI’s success was Khalid Mohamed’s super dud of the year FIZA! Hrithik played a terrorist opposite Neha with Karisma Kapoor playing the main protagonist and his elder sister. Hrithik’s third film in 2000 was MISSION KASHMIR, which also failed at the box-office. Even though post KAHO NAA…PYAR HAI Hrithik had signed many films, they all took their time to release in the subsequent years. In 2001, Subash Ghai gave his biggest dud with Hrithik-Kareena in YAADEIN, which the star would love to forget yet it will haunt him all his life in his track record. At the box-office, unlike other superstars, Hrithik had given his third flop in a row (FIZA / MISSION KASHMIR & YAADEIN) post KAHO NAA…PYAR HAI. However, Hrithik was lucky with Karan Johar’s KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM in 2001. Hrithik did acted well and showed his mettle to meet the eyes of two superstars in the film. However, his histrionics were not talked about because the film truly belonged to Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. The film was a hit but Hrithik’s presence was never the reason for its success as two superstars preceded him in every respect. The question looming in the industry was why this newborn KAHO NAA…PYAR HAI successful hero is not bankable at the box-office? Having worked with the best of banners like Subash Ghai, Rajshris, Farhan Akhtar and others, success seems to elude him sans his father. 2002 is the year that Hrithik would love to erase from his track record or life as people (fans & industry folks) wondered why did Hrithik jeopardize his new career by signing films like AAP MUJHE ACHACH LAGNE LAGE / MUJHSE DOSTI KAROGE and NA TUM JAANO NA HUM? True to the title of his third film Arjun Sablok’s NA TUM JAANO NA HUM with Esha Deol, nobody really knows. Was it the money factor or else… When Hrithik was asked about the failure of his films, he said, “I put in my best every time I work in any film, irrespective of whether it is directed by my father or other filmmakers.” However, one cannot rule out the fact that the hurried move he made in signing movies post KAHO NAA…PYAR HAI surely has to be balanced. Producers who signed Hrithik after KN…PH refused to repeat him their future ventures, for the simple reason that his status at the box-office was not bringing in the moolah. And the universal truth is that no one, repeat no one would beat on a losing horse. In 2003, Rajshri’s MAIN PREM KI DIWANI HOON failed at the box-office as all the three stars, namely, Hrithik, Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor were considered as jinx actors at the box-office. A poor remake of hit CHITCHOR in modern times failed to bring in the moolah for the Rajshris as well as Hrithik. Meanwhile, his continuous steak of failure at the box-office surely made papa Roshan to re-launch his only son with KOI…MIL GAYA. The film became a rage with Hrithik playing the character with great aplomb, Jadoo’s (ET) presence and Preity Zinta’s great chemistry with the star. Hrithik was again in the reckoning as he established his status at the box-office with KOI…MIL GAYA. Various distributors do feel strongly that Hrithik cannot be put in the leagues of the Khan trio (Shah Rukh – Aamir & Salman Khan). Rakesh Sippy, who distributes films (Raksha Distributors) says, “Hrithik’s films have worked only when his father directs the film just like Aishwarya Rai and Sanjay Leela Bhansali work wonders together. Shah Rukh – Aamir and Salman Khan are the most bankable stars at the box-office. What works in their favour is that all of them have given hits with various directors. While Aamir and Shah Rukh have great support of big banners, Salman Khan has given hits even without big banners. Now that is what I call being a superhero! Not to forget the least, stars don’t sell a movie but it is the total combination of movie making with packaging and marketing which makes a film hit like KRRISH is!” Post KOI…MIL GAYA, in spite of its great success, various filmmakers were skeptical to sign Hrithik for their films. Hrithik was going through a lean patch as he had no offers on a platter and with just Farhan Akhtar’s LAKSHYA in 2004, he didn’t had any release in 2005. In fact, a source from Ramu’s Factory revealed, “After LAKSHYA’s release Hrithik was in constant touch with Ramu and was desperate to work with him. However, things never worked for them.” Like Pankaj Jaisingh, another distributor (Shri Ashtavinayak Distributors) says, “Hrithik’s movie has done very well but he has a niche market unlike the Khans or yester year superstars.” Bollywood is a funny and insecure place to be for actors. Because you are as good as your last hit film. In 2004, LAKSHYA bombed at the box-office and industry people realized Hrithik’s success mantra is only with his father being a director. With no offers, Hrithik declared a la Aamir Khan, “I love to do one film at a time!” This declaration too worked against him as filmmakers who were keen to cast him stopped approaching him for their projects. Post LAKSHYA, Rakesh Roshan declared he sequel to KOI…MIL GAYA as KRRISH. A lot of hype was created from the word go. In fact, another sources revealed that Rakesh Roshan was scouting for a box-office lucky heroine, who would give KRRISH good ticket window. “What few may know that first a Kashmir girl brought up in London by the name Ferena, a model was first offered KRRISH. However, after the photo shoot, papa Roshan realized that the girl’s persona was stronger than Hrithik’s, so she was dropped from the project,” reveals an insider. Amrita Rao was the second choice, who was riding high with three hits under her belt – ISHQ VISHK / MASTO & MAIN HOON NA – was considered as the lucky mascot for various filmmakers. However, what worked against Amrita Rao was her young innocent looks. Hrithik and Amrita’s pairing looked mismatched after the photo shoot. Aishwarya Rai was the third choice before it finally went to Priyanka Chopra. Priyanka was considered lucky because of her MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGE with Salman and Akshay Kumar. With KRRISH Hrithik has once again rose to stardom like his earlier days of KAHO NAA…PYAR HAI and KOI…MIL GAYA. Many stars often talk about Hrithik’s career off the record and say the same thing that Hrithik is good only when his father directs him. Only when they work together there’s magic in his films! One will have to wait and watch if and only if Hrithik will be able to sustain his superhero status with more hits outside his home production. Currently, Hrithik has just two films Yashraj’s DHOOM 2 (ready for release), where in he plays the main villain and JODHA AKBAR! Will Hrithik be able to pull off the Mughal Emperor’s magical persona like Prithiviraj Kapoor’s brilliance persona in K Asif’s MUGHAL-E-AZAM? Chances are rare but all eyes are on the flying superhero KRRISH for now! Johnny D
