For Children
Finders-Keepers

This is more of an adult rant rather uncleverly disguised as a children's poem, but it is a better way of letting off steam than incessant nagging. Just as ineffective, sad to say, but a release, nonetheless.

Finders-Keepers

Now, in the land of lost-and-found

The finders-keepers live

They never make a single sound,

They take just what you give.

A sneaker here, a pencil there

A book, a magazine

The clip you use to pin your hair

(On those they’re ‘specially keen)

The things you never put away

‘Cause you don’t have the time

They pocket them and smile (They say

‘Well hey, it’s not a crime.’)

You see, they’ve got a special place

For things they get from you

That five-pound note, that one shoe lace

Your coat and mittens too –

They’ll put ‘em where you’d never think

That they should ever be

(Behind the stove -- the bathroom sink --

Some place you’ll never see!)

They watch you as you search around

For what you cannot find

They know it never will be found

Till you’ve half lost your mind.

Your panic – and your frantic haste

Amuses them no end

Your time is theirs to idly waste

As you go ‘round the bend

And when you’ve searched both high & low

And must concede defeat

You’ll find the thing you hunted so

Is lying at your feet.

Yes in the land of lost-and-found

The finders-keepers stay

If you don’t want their kind around,

Then put your things away!

Liked this a lot Witzl - I think kids would too - adult rant or not.

If you ever lose the TV remote, look in the fridge - that's where ours usually ends up.

All the best,

Phil.

Thanks, Phil. Actually, that's where we find our house keys on occasion. Those nasty old finders-keepers!

Love the idea of them watching, while you run round in endless circles searching for the keys, you know how you always want to blame someone else for losing them! Great way of saying 'put your stuff away' feel like hanging this on the bedroom door for my son!
Good

Hello, Witzel. I think children will love this poem. Have you already tried it on them? Of the characters in my poems, "Mickledy-Me" is the most popular, and he is an invisible friend who does the same sort of things. Children come running up to me telling me of more and more outrageous stories. He was the one who hid the Queen's handbag, and locked the royal corgis in a cupboard at the Queen's Garden Party for Literary Characters last summer but shhhhh! It's not many of us who know that.
