VEGETABLE DREAMS

Sweet corn, snugly wrapped

kernels tight, precise

silk of fine, pale green

whispering in the wind

Plump tomatoes, trembling

waiting for the knife

drunk on summer sun,

questing bumble bees

Courgette, green-and-cream

bulging on the vine

quick, a twist, a snap –

—wrest from leafy nest

Rhubarb’s rose-tinged nubs

poked through frozen crusts

Now triumphant limbs

clad in emerald robes

Sweet snaps, crisp and taut

pushed from frothy white

petals, wafting scent

tendrils, thin and coiled

Pumpkins, golden globes

Tangled deep inside

moist and thick-walled womb

glistening, wedge-shaped jewels

SWEET DREAMS WITZL

Goodness me! I would have had to have thought for a week to have got so much out of the vegetables that you have. What a wonderful description. You are competing with DH Lawrence (see his: Flowers of Tuscany). Really good writing Witzl. I loved it.

Nice clean imagery, it had quite a nostalgic feel to it for me. To me, the second verse felt like it was missing a word somewhere...but no matter, I thoroughly enjoyed this.

A sensuous exploration of the vegetable garden. As an organic gardener, I enjoyed it.

What about exposing your melons though? :grin

I didn't grow melons this year, so have none to expose. But you ought to see my pumpkins! (Don't know how to use emoticons and don't plan on learning how, but picture one right here with gormless smiling face: ______).

Thank you for reading thisand commenting, everyone. No more vegetables to watch growing for five long months. Unless my daikon radishes shock me and manage to survive.

I am reminded of coy mistresses :

My vegetable love should grow
Vaster than empires, and more slow.

Took a lot of fertiliser though ( of the bovine kind )

I liked this, particularly the last verse.. which had the makings of a potential haiku if restructured.
