Serengeti Mass

They swirl in a stupendous dusty vortex,
Desperate to merge in feline eyes,
Not me! Nor me! Nor me!
Yet the lioness picks her prize.

Then the fun begins,
Confusion gains a sound,
The cloudless blue sky spins,
Around! Around! Around!

The herd soon betray their weakest,
(No flabby sentimentality in this breed!)
The lioness, all sleekness,
Synchronising speed.

And then the mercy leap,
The jugular is ripped,
Resigned, the eyes still weep,
In her draining grip.

The wildebeest relax as one,
Return to grazing, unconcerned,
Nature’s communion is done,
Another day earned.

Is this inspired by that wildlife programme on the TV the other night? If so, well done I think you captured the mood of it well. I was mesmerised by it and thought of writing something myself but I think I’ll just read yours again. I don’t think I could improve on that.

Beautifully written. I liked the second stanza in particular -- I could sense the terror and confusion felt by the wildebeest trying to get away from the lioness. And it is always amazing to me that after such a savage attack on one of their members, an entire herd will go right back to 'business as usual.'

And I had TWO dead mice just outside my bedroom this morning. . .

Super piece. I coud really feel the excitement building in this and then normalise (horrid word) at the end.

All the best,

Phil.

It was kinda mesmerising. I enjoyed it (though I'm really not keen on all the exclamation marks). Liked the change of pace throughout. Great.
