Elli suggested I write a poem and I sat down to do it and this came up, maybe next time.
People today were digesting the news that scientists claim that marmite may help calm the middle east conflict.
“We realised the one thing both sides have in common is their use of unleaved bread in their diet” said one of the scientists “The lack of yeast means they are deficient in certain essential minerals such as Zinc and the B vitamins which are known to benefit the nerves and parts of the brain involved in behaviour”
They went on to claim to an astonished audience that marmite has all the missing ingredients in abundance and if both sides were to include it in their diets it might cause a change in their behaviour towards each other.
Tony Blair is said to be guardedly in favour. “Well, hey y’know why not ,y’know give it a try. Cherie always puts it on my soldiers, it keeps me calm. I’m trying to persuade Prescott to try it before he twats someone again but he claims it’s soft southern, nancy-boy piss and will only drink Bovril”
George Bush has hailed it as a possible break through saying “Tony Blair tells me it’s very popular in Great Bahrain and is a favourite with your Queen. Mind you, it didn’t do much for Freddie Mercury but the other three look good on it”
Reaction in the middle east has been mixed. Fawzi Barhoum for Hamas denounced it as Zionist conspiracy designed to de-lead the pencils of Arab men everywhere “We have no idea what this evil smelling stuff will do to our todgers” he said. “The Israelis hope to out-breed us with this foul concoction.”
A Fatah spokesman was a little more conciliatory but on being pressed admitted he only used it to keep the camels off his dates.
Reaction from the Knesset has been muted. “Sweet Jesus, you guys actually eat this” was all we could get from a spokesman. After American pressure president Ehud Olmert issued a statement. “We have given the matter careful consideration but the stumbling block is it tastes like shit. If this is the answer I’m not sure I wouldn’t rather risk the bombs”
Secretary General Kofi Annan was unfazed by this unanimous rejection of the extract saying
“Well, it is well know with Marmite that you either love it or you hate it and we seem to have a convergence of opinion here as they all hate it. This is a hopeful sign. I think we have at last found some common ground to work on.
The scientists went into a blind sulk complaining he had missed the point.

Hi BBS! I loved this - had me laughing from start to finish. I especially liked the line 'it didn't do much for Freddie Mercury, but the other three look good on it' - absolute class! You certainly have a great talent for comedy! |

I knew I'd heard this before! Took me a little while on google to find the guys name though. (I feel very proud of myself now ) As a Marmite fan, I'm chuffed to bits. No, really, I liked this very much. Funny, as usual. Elli |

| That's great, the way you've developed the idea. Mind you, it's expensive stuff, isn't it... but then again, what price peace, eh. Could start off with a few twiglet cluster bombs, just to see how it goes down. Very good, BBS... loved the bit about keeping the camels off his dates... that's one hell of a rough escort agency... |

Your right bottlebillybunter, marmite is for soft southern nancies. Up north we prefer manure on our butties. You always get some good gags in to your comic offerings which is great. I reckon you look very much at home in this section. Cheers Big G. |

I loved this - chuckled all the way through. And of course your first premise is fundamental science - or so they would have us believe. I remember my American relatives' reaction to twiglets - which I took them as a present one year. I think they would prefer the problem to the cure. But of course, their dietary answer to behaviour problems - peanut butter - would not please lots of English eaters.

Mildly amusing concept. Chuckle muscles remain unexcercised. Oli |

Well Jane, a smile here rather than belly laugh. But a smile nonetheless. I think shorter would have meant sharper and possibly a few too may gags/ideas elbowing eachother about. But I am hardly in a position to lecture anybody on that. Do like the juxtaposition of the sublime and the ridiculous. Just my kind of territory. Well done! Slan! PS I hope you got the PM and it was of some use to you. |

Well, I laughed my head off and may have even ruptured one of my chuckle muscles. Like Coosh, it was the bit about keeping the camels off the dates that got me going. One small niggle: you make GW sound too glib. He wouldn't say 'favourite' or even 'favorite' either -- he'd probably go for 'favert.' And I'd change 'Mind you,' to something more Yank-worthy as well. Not sure what, though -- I may have spent too long away from the Old Country. Have you heard that sauerkraut and/or kimchee are very effective against avian bird flu? Who knows, maybe we all should give marmite a chance. . . |

...particularly at the 'Queen' line! I love Marmite, so it was quite hurtful to see it trashed like that. However if it helps bring peace to the Middle East then who am I to complain? |

I enjoyed this one Jane - some nice little throw-away lines which made me chuckle. You have obviously done a tremendous amount of research for this one. I had to give up marmite after developing breasts, and I`m now trying to wean myself off it with liberal spoonfuls of Pats vegemite. Now, where did I put that nice purple frock...... happy writing Woody |

Enjoyed this Jane. I'm a marmite lover (allowed for a northerner?) and wasn't surprised it might have magic qualities. All the best, Phil. |

Thanks one and all for taking the time to comment.I didn't expect such a response. It was one of those ideas that was funnier in my head than it was on the page but 11 liked it 1 didn't. I'll happily take those odds Much obliged Jane |

| Marmite! Heavens it would have to be vegemite to have a chance at international appeal. (Perhaps we have hit/found the problem again). |
