David

Ignore the numbers. They're just the numbers of the paragraphs....

I can still recollect those dreams of David. From the time we spent our time together as mere innocent children to the growing of our adolescents. We were always friends to begin with, the closest any friend could get. Always, we could share our inner secrets that we swore not to tell anyone else. He was like my twin as I was his. 1

It was one day when we were both twelve years old that David turned around to me. He gazed at me strangely and finally said, "Amelia, did you know that we were intended to be together?"2

I laughed and thought his question was foolish. Punching him on the arm, I replied, "David, you silly, what made you think of such a question?"3

He shrugged and glanced at the blue sky above us. It was unusually bright and the rays of the sun glowered down on us. As children, we would always sit on the grass and think of the most silliest thoughts any child could think of.4

I stared at his face. He was very handsome indeed and was had the face of an angel. Grinning, I rolled over and poked him on his side. He let out a small squeal and tried to get back at me. But I was too quick and we ended up in a rowdy chase. By then, our mothers saw our careless fling and put an end to it.5

Three years later, we had just entered high school as freshmen. Ironic as it was, David and I had the same classes. Everyday, we sat at the same table and talk about everything. About politics, about school, about people, and about our friendship. He was so good to me and acted like a brother. 6

It was one day when I asked David, "What would happen if we never met?"7

He shrugged. "I don't know Amelia. Maybe we would end up on different paths. Maybe the world would exist without us. I don't know."8

I rolled the question off my mind. Maybe I was getting too emotional over our friendship. After all, we had been together for over ten years.9

By the time junior year rolled by, I found out that David had a girlfriend. Immediately, I felt jealousy rising but I didn't show it in front of David. He was happy and as much I hated it, I tried to be happy for him.10

"Amelia, you should meet her. She is drop-dead gorgeous and has a really good sense of humor. I know how before I hated popular girls but now, they're not as bad. Do you agree with me?" 11

I nodded absently. "Of course, David. Once you get to know someone, the more you like them."12

The following week, David took me out to Betty's Diner. There, he was greeted by a flock of his new buddies. As they talked about sports and girls, I was left to stare desolately out of the window. David was becoming popular while I was being left in the dust. My dear David was slipping away from me.13

Jealousy and rage over David kept building in my mind. Finally, I snapped. When David came over to my house, I refused to talk to him.14

"What's wrong Amelia? Did something happen?"15

I shook my head and turned away from him.16

"Amelia, this doesn't have something to do between us? Did I offend you in any way?"17

His comment shook me deeply. I turned my heel to face him.18

"Yes you are, David. Our friendship is slipping away. You always talk to your so-called buddies about this and that. We barely talk together at lunch since you always sit with your pals now."19

He looked a bit hurt but also bewildered.20

"Amelia, our friendship isn't going anywhere."21

I pouted my lips and folded my arms. He obviously didn't see my point.22

"No, you don't understand, David. You don't freakin' understand."23

He stepped back and held up his hands.24

"Whatever you say, Amelia." With that, he exited out the door and left.25

A part of me felt guilty about hurting David but another felt hurt by the way he made no effort to find a way to solve our problem. I raced to my room and wept for the rest of the night.26

However, a fateful night occurred. The next morning, I received a phone call from David's mom.27

"Amelia, honey, I'm afraid something terrible has happened to David."28

Instinctively, I dropped the phone. This couldn't be happening. Rushing to pick it up, I held the phone firmly on my ear.29

"Amelia, David was found dead in an accident last night after he left your house. The truck driver was drunk and collided head-on with David's car."30

My mom was by my side. She observed my pale face and by her confused look, I could tell she was concerned about me. Darkness engulfed my vision as I faded out of cautiousness.31

My best friend, the love of my life was gone. Gone from this life, gone from my life. He was no longer to be seen or heard from, instead mourned on his grave. I regretted our argument on that fateful night. If anything I could wish in the world would be to say:32

"David, I love you and I care for you very much. As a friend, I'll share your happiness and always be at your side. You are my angel and savior."
