'Tis the Season
By Witzl
22 November 2006
It's that time of year again. Every year, just about this time, it starts. I tell myself that this year it is going to be different and I am going to resist getting sucked into the same old rat-race, and every year I get sucked into it all the same.

There is a part 2 to this poem, but I will spare you that for a few weeks . . .

‘TIS THE SEASON

Every year it’s just the same

I don’t want to play the game

Buy her this, send him that

Christmas stocking for the cat

Costly presents for the spoiled

Greasing wheels already oiled

Will he like it? Will she use it?

(If they could, would they refuse it?)

Write the cards! Bake the cake!

Trim the tree for pity's sake!

Decorate the whole damn place

Caught up in this fool’s rat-race

Shopping malls with loathsome glitz

Bratty children throwing fits

Disco carols from unctuous choirs

Plastic trees! Electric fires!

Spent too much or not enough?

(Surely no one needs this stuff!)

Where’s the meaning? Where’s the love?

Too much hard-sell, push-and-shove!

Christmas day:   the TVs blare

The bellies bloat, the children stare

The wrapping paper piles up high

The children quarrel, the parents sigh

…Every year it’s just the same

I don’t want to play the game

Still, I play it – yes, I do

Merry Christmas to you, too

Tedious isn't it! I did all my Christmas shopping yesterday evening (hooray for late night shopping when no-one else is mad enough to leave the house) and that's it, I'm forgetting about it until Christmas. Bah humbug :)

Not many people would relate to this Mary, only around 40 million in this country I expect ;)

We make the best of it don't we? It's for the kids (or is it for the toy, card, gadget manufacturers?)

Also, I get all the stress of cooking for us and Weasel's hyper-critical folks.

'Tis NOT the season to be Oli! Tralalalala...

Oli :grin :?

Christmas presents given to those who have everything already. What to give them, what they'll use - too much stuff already. "Don't give me any more that needs dusting every week PLEASE!" Don't give me chocolate when I want to lose weight. It's such a different world to the world of my childhood (the war years) when you were lucky if you had one toy made by your parents, and a book, ordered well in advance. Then you appreciate it!

God it's mad isn't it? Its all those frosted windows and glittery displays that just pull you in though, and once you start, there's no stopping it!

Read my mind Witzl. What a farce it really is. Still, I too get drawn in every year.

Enjoyed.

All the best,

Phil.
