I don't know what to make of this.... I know nothing Yet I'm told I must know something I must know something about something I must know something, anything I know nothing I'm telling myself to say nothing I don't know anything about anything I don't know something about many things I know nothing Because that way I won't be disappointed When that something I thought I knew Is only the tip of that particular iceberg I know nothing Other than we live and breathe And then we die at the same time as many others Probably alone, knowing nothing I know nothing It's almost a motto now It's a badge I wear on my sleeve It stops all the arguments. |

Stupid, but a survival tactic. This, and my comment above have echoes of the former Mr Clarity himself - Donald Rumsfelt (sp?) - ('There are things we know we don't know and there are things etc etc etc) This did detract from the piece a little. Otherwise, liked it. (It beats receipts into a cocked hat. - Promise I'll not mention it again if you don't!) All the best, Phil. | Written by Talisker (1321 comments posted) 29th November 2006 | Well structured - a real poem at last - not a great one, but a worthy ditty. C'mon old Shakey, you do know some things. Or is this in the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" vein - I see. Know nothing for an easy life. Oh well, we all got to get through somehow. Well wrote. Oli | Written by Witzl (1585 comments posted) 29th November 2006 | This reminds me of something Mark Twain said. How he knew everything when he was a kid, and his father knew nothing. Then when he was a little older, his father knew a bit more and he knew a bit less -- until, when he was finally a grown man himself, he realized that his father was a saint and incredibly well informed -- and that he himself knew nothing. Most of us go from knowing absolutely everything to knowing practically nothing. The idea is, you learn as you go, and keep reshaping, redefining what you do know. You do learn that way -- and learning that there are limits to what you know is indeed learning something in its own right. And just because you know nothing, it's no fair keeping it to yourself when the rest of us are willing to share our ignorance! | Written by horror4lover (14 comments posted) 29th November 2006 | thats all i gota say | Written by shakermaker (48 comments posted) 29th November 2006 | As Phil rightly said, "I know nothing" is a survival tactic. Not one I'm keen to use, but pleading ignorant can often help a situation, this is probably what I was getting at. (And yes, no more receipts! Deal!) And to Talisker thanks. Interesting you see this as poetry, but not the last few I wrote. Any chance of letting me know why? I know nothing after all! Witzl, I like the Twain idea, and did think along the same lines as I grew up. Not sure if that's what I was saying in this piece, but I do understand it.And yeah, we seem to know all we need to know, and then suddenly we know nothing at all because life changes, and we see things from other peopels points of view. If you live in a fishtank, you never see the ocean. I like the Paul Weller line "The more I see, the more I know, the more I know, the less I understand." horror4lover, I hope you've woken up now. | Written by fellpony (1580 comments posted) 26th February 2007 | | I couldn't get past the image of Manuel in Fawlty Towers: "Hi know Naaartheeng." | Written by rushwilde (16 comments posted) 20th July 2007 | I seem to like all the things other people dont praise. I may see a short story that starts out with drastic descriptins and in depth this ad that and whatever else.... and it's just not sticky. I dont feel a jab to pass the first Line. I coud if i wanted to...but it oesnt make mewant to, because I'm lazy and I want to be carried to the end. I'm saying that, to say this: I liked your poem, i read it not because i felt i should give it a chance, but because it was the natural course of action. It was easy to read, and by vishnu easy to understand! null |
