The steppe
By Fledermaus
04 December 2006
I see endless grassy plains
I have seen you in my dreams
Hot blood pulsing in my veins
The steppes call me it seems

Hoofs upon the barren ground
Horses gallop, running wild
Drums, thunder, violent sound
The burning wind, never mild

Cheering men, an arrow shot
Rolling hills, grasslands so wide
Nights are icy, day are  hot
We saddle horses and ride

Outside the yurt the wind howls
The horses neigh the goats bleat
Before the tents a hound crawls
We cook soup of hunted meat

Only once I was on horseback
And I've never seen the plain
Instead of a bow, a bagpack
To my lectures I go by train

I thought this was a great idea, loved the twist at the end. It was quite tight at the beginning but I felt that you let the rhythm slip a bit towards the end and the howl/crawl half-rhyme really stuck out for me. Could be good though IMO

Thanks Elli.

I'll try to work on rhyme and rhytm... After all, they are the most important ingredients of a poem :)

Evocative! Fascinating people are the nomadic tribes of the steppes - you could develop this theme more.

You reminded me about yurts - you can build a modern one! What fun!

Thank you Oli. A modern yurt? I saw a TV programme once about Central Asia. They had very modern stone houses shaped like yurds :D

I thought it was very visual and wild with excitement.

I enjoyed reading it.
